Ecology Project: Non-Native Invasive Species

For the Ecology project, I participated in the event at Morongo Valley Preserve. This took place on September 30th. During the time spent at the event I helped to trim the side walks. This was done to help remove plants not native to the preserve, and this also made the sidewalks more presentable. I was taught many important ideas during this time spent at this event. According to Non-native Invasive Plants an Introduction, an article done by University of Florida, non-native plants refers to a plant from other continents. The article also states that “non-native can also mean plants from another region ‘within the same country’”. In it, information is presented stating that not all plants described as non-native are harmful to the environment. The plants removed during the time spent at the preserve were in fact harmful, as they take preshus space and nutrients from plants that are in the food chain. Let somebody else do it”. This statement is preposterous, as its basis is to be lazy. If we were to follow this statement, nothing would ever be resolved. This would lead to world wide panic, as not doing our part to ensure the world continues, will end it. Broken down, this means that every trash piece left on the ground will potentially lead to an animal's death, continuing down a very extensive food chain, all the way to humans. This project increased my appreciation and respect strongly for my desert in many ways. It first started with learning how I can participate in helping clean our desert. This lead to wanting to know how my actions helped the desert. When I found that I really do affect the desert positively, it helps to appreciate my actions.
