Ecology Personal Statement

When I look at the environment, I see a living organism. Like any organism, it responds to stimuli, positively and negatively. Currently, as the human population grows, it appears that the environment is becoming sick, needing to be healed. The best way to do that is by caring for it like a doctor cares for their patient, or in this case, an ecologist for the environment. Growing up in a family of healthcare providers, I was exposed to the nitty gritty of what actually happens in a hospital or clinic, and quite frankly, it has interested me. Since I could ask my mom the question, "How was your day?", and he she would tell me about her patients, there has been no doubt I was going to choose a career involving medicine. And like any passion, it is seen as the ultimate achievement to make it into your career. Well, I couldn't decide if I wanted to be a medical practitioner or an ecologist. My calling for medicine beckoned me to learn how the body functions and is built, while my calling for ecology directs me towards striving to protect what is remaining on this planet to ensure it is kept clean, healthy, and beautiful. Luckily, I discovered that the answer to this confliction would reveal itself during my freshman year of college while talking with my biology professor. During this conversation, she informed me that the STEM community not only needs expert scientist in particular fields as well as those who are fluent in multiple disciplines to provide the needed diversity of knowledge. It was then I realized that the merging of these two passions into the career I desired feasible.
