Write An Essay On My Ecological Footprint

The idea of an ecological footprint is becoming a popular topic among advocates of sustainability. An individual’s ecological footprint is the coined phrase that relates their use of the Earth’s natural resources to the amount of land needed to support their current lifestyle. When calculating ecological footprint, there are several different factors that are taken into account. These factors can range from the amount of locally grown foods consumed to the average number of miles driven on a daily basis.
Personally, I thought my ecological footprint would be significantly lower than the average American’s (5 earths). The main reasoning behind this involves my diet and my transportation habits. I do not eat any meat besides chicken on a rare occasion. Also, I have Celiac disease, so the majority of the foods I eat are organic or locally grown, which ultimately takes away the harm of

I saw a change when I chose to recycle more plastics and papers. It didn’t make “a world” of a change, but it made a difference which I believe matters just as much. Our residence hall provides each room with their own recycling bin, and by ditching the laziness and putting the papers and plastics into the recycling bin I can lessen my environmental impact. I also saw a difference when it came to the amount of up-to-date technology I owned. I originally had the bar set to having every new technological item, and by lessening that to having a few new products made a small difference to my ecological footprint. I will keep this in mind when a new iPhone comes out. It really is not that necessary to have a brand new one when I have the previous version that is in perfect condition. These small changes in my lifestyle can make my ecological footprint a little bit smaller, and by sharing this knowledge with my friends and family, the positive impact will only

As the Department of Energy states in its booklet recently published in 2009, Energy Savers Booklet: Tips on SavingEnergy & Money at Home, we as people should “start making small changes today” (EnergySavers). With this booklet they are allowing Americans to have the freedom to make their ownchoices while giving recommendations on ways to conserve energy and help for futuregenerations to come. Things such as driving sensibly to not waste gasoline through poor choiceslike aggressive driving and turning off computers and anything electric when not being used are discussed in this booklet (Energy Savers). These few examples are small changes that could inreality change the world. Instead of forcing the issue upon the people, giving them small changesthat can easily be done and not change their entire lifestyle will make the population morewilling to change and less reluctant to green practices.…

Because almost all of the food that I eat is supplied by large companies, I am not helping to reduce the carbon footprint through my food choices. My family and I do not go out of our way to eat food produced locally except for the food that we grow in our own garden. Some environmental impacts of supporting the industrial food system are the growing lack of diversity, chemical run-off, and growing pest-resistance. Economically, my food choices are contributing to the transformation of crops into commodities. Farmers are told to produce higher and higher yields regardless of the sacrifice of uniqueness and diversity.…

In the same nature as everything else in the world, there are spectrums of people holding different beliefs involving the environment. There are extreme activists who conserve as much of the planet’s resources as possible, just as there are some on the opposite end of the spectrum who do not consider the effects their daily lives have on the environment. However, much of the population more than likely falls in the middle of the spectrum. I would consider myself somewhere between the middle and an environmentalist. Though, after taking the Ecological Footprint Calculator Quiz, I soon realized I am not as much as preservationist as I thought.…
