Ecofeminism Vs Transcendentalism

Although ecofeminism helped to decenter the conceptuality of ‘male’ as a central subject of environmental debates, there were scholars who criticized the theory for homogenizing women and for assigning essentialist characteristics to women as a group (references). Critics like Agarwal (1992) and Jackson (1996) drew attention to the necessity of understanding women’s actions and knowledge in context of everyday political economy, division of labor and property rights (references).Drawing insights from empirical evidences gathered from her own work on women and fuel-wood issues in the Himalaya (India and Nepal), Agarwal (1992) in the late 1980s organized a body of gender theories known as feminist environmentalism that critiqued some of the motifs

The story of the fearless, compassionate soul taking on the wild to gain knowledge and experience is timeless. Especially in the name of Transcendentalism and nonconformity many have gone on a journey to find meaning within this life and within themselves. Transcendentalism was a movement which encouraged nonconformity, the idea that God is found with everything, man is pure and wholly, also the regression to solitude in nature. The most recent infamous and tragic story of this would be that of Christopher McCandless. This man has left an imprint on society in a very shocking way.…

As many people know, feminism is the advocacy of equal rights between the sexes. But fewer people know about ecofeminism, which is not only the advocation of equal rights, but is the inclusion of the advocation of ecological issues in the advocation of equality. Ecofeminism sees that the oppression of women and the oppression of nature are inherently linked and therefore the advocation of the rights of one means that the rights of the other must be advocated for as well. Karen Warren, a philosophy professor and author of multiple books and articles about ecological philosophy, claims in her article The Power and the Promise of Ecological Feminism that feminism and ecological issues are linked because their oppression comes from three conceptual…

Transcendentalists believed in multiple interesting things that could possibly change people’s lives. These interesting people believed in things such as civil disobedience, nature, and self-reliance. They flourished during the 1800s in the United States of America. The songs I will be comparing Transcendentalism to are “Spring Day” by BTS, “Thunder” by EXO, “Gotta Go My Own Way” by High School Musical, and “Love Myself” by Hailee Steinfeld. Transcendentalists were very keen on the idea of appreciating nature, just like the songs “Spring Day” and “Thunder” and self-reliance like in the songs “Love Myself” and “Gotta Go My Own Way.”…

Imagine sitting under a large oak tree with the wind blowing against your face, white daisies blooming, and hummingbirds chirping all around you. Transcendentalists would view this experience with zeal because they believe that the world around them is august and that they can connect with God through it. Mary, I am aware that you disagree with these beliefs and consider it a waste of time to engage in nature. However, if you give the Transcendentalist ideas a chance, you are sure to change your mind and fall in love with the beautiful appearance and tranquil essence of the environment. Absorbing the beauty of our surroundings allows individuals to relax and clear their minds.…

Freedom from invisible bounds, that is what they were searching for. In the 1830’s and 60’s, a new way of life started: Transcendentalism. They were against the Puritan ideals of wealth and wanted a closer and more emotional relationship with God. They strived to break away from the norms and to break away from the traditions and the lifestyle society had expected them to live by, and to seek their own way of living. In Jon Krakauer’s novel, Into the Wild, Chris McCandless displays the transcendentalist principal of nonconformity by not going along with what society wants, and by eventually living life away from society.…

Both authors believed in the idea of individuals engaging in their emotional state, they also believe people should listen to their own voice, and listen clearly in their hearts and minds as they engage in self definition. In Self Reliance the author Emerson quotes that “imitation is suicide”, and Thoreau believes in staying true to one’s own conviction as one engages in self definition. The need to define oneself through action and rebellion, listening to one’s heart and mind as opposed to blindly following the state, is important to Thoreau. Thoreau and Emerson are both transcendentalists, they believe that people should adhere to their own conscience and not worry too much about what society thought they should do.…

Jon Krakauer’s Into The Wild is a biography that recounts events from the life of Chris McCandless, a transcendentalist who decided to go into the Alaska wild on his own with very few supplies and live his life as simplistically as possible. He uses McCandless’s personal journals as excerpts that give specific and reliable details from his time off the grid. Krakauer’s fascination with - and connection to - McCandless creates a more romanticized perspective of his journey while still staying true to the non-fiction form of a biography. While Krakauer’s intentions for the book were for it to spread transcendentalist and anti-societal ideas, the way in which people receive these ideas is not always the same. Certain issues addressed in the book can be taken harshly or acceptingly, and because many of the issues…

During the 18th century a group of like minded women began fighting for, even when faced by near impossible odds and fierce opposition, the right to vote. During the nearly century long battle between the sexes, many tactics were implemented to make the opposition realize that the right to vote should be given to men and women alike (with some exceptions at the time). These tactics, which lead to the end of the women’s suffrage movement, could aid in the current movement of environmental activists and their attempt to combat and mitigate losses to the natural world. As seen in the movie, “One Woman, One Vote”, politicians needed to be on your side, connectivity and numbers were required, and innovative public engagement campaigns were necessary to make the changes society needed. Perhaps, once these fundamentals are more rigorously put to action within the environmental movements agenda, progress towards a less impacted and more conserved earth will be accelerated.…

A True Preserve Of Nature Most people would argue that the transcendental principles are too extreme to live by. McCandless travels to Alaska, intent to live in the solitude of nature, similar to how Thoreau traveled to Walden Pond.
