Eco-villages: A Part of the New Elk Grove?
Imagine yourself in a town that looks somewhat like a fairy tale: houses float from trees, children are able to roam free of mundane fear, neighborhoods are surrounded by nature, and in this town all living arrangements coincide with nature. The residents of this town work with nature not against it, for their own selfish desires. In return, they receive the benefits of being surrounded by nature. These types of towns are in fact real, and have a name, eco villages. Now as an Elk Grove resident and parent, the idea of an eco village probably seems farfetched, and many have not even heard of the term, eco villages, unless they are an environmental activist. The first question that comes to mind is

The term eco villages was first coined in the book, Last Child in the Woods by Ricahrd Louv. Richard Louv mentioned various developments of eco villages in European countries that were described in Timothy Beatley 's book, Green Urbanism: Learning from European Cities. Beatley mentions cities such as Sweden, Zurich, and the Netherlands. Europeans have successfully applied the idea of eco villages to their cities. According to Timothy Beatley, in Sweden homes are built on pillars to minimize the impact on nature and look like they are floating on air, as well as owning up to 60 of its own farms that are available to the public. Beatley states," that one quarter of Zurich is in forest and that their goal is to restore urban streams and line them with vegetation." (Louv) Lastly, in the Netherlands, they have a plan to cut off a highway to make an eco roof for bikes and pedestrians to walk. For European cities as a whole, the landscape is intertwined with nature but keeps the same urban qualities that are present in any …show more content…
According to Benefits of Life, “Eco friendly living is good for your health, the environment, creates jobs, and creates the demand for more eco friendly products." Being aware of the environment reduces the amount of pollution that can affect your skin, lungs, food, or anything that goes into your body. Environmental jobs that assist in helping the environment are on the rise since we are in critical times and with eco friendly living becoming more popular means more jobs for residents of Elk Grove. Ecofriendly living also creates the demand for more environmentally cautious products since more individuals are using them. Lastly the environment benefits the most. The vegetation on earth is more likely to survive if we treat it as sacred and with some care. According to “Cloughjordan: Ecovillage” by Peadar Kirby, Ireland was their first to have a member owned farm that is used all year long. (Peadar 51) The people of Cloughjordan have a understanding of where their food comes from and also an appreciation of the time that goes into the process of growing produce. The Cloughjordan farm is a perfect example of how eco villages can create jobs and encourage the creation of eco friendly products. Even though there are many benefits, the main concern is the

One successful example of these villages is a 14-year-old tent city turned into a semi-permanent housing community on the outskirts of Portland that goes by the name of Dignity Village. Mitch Grubic is one of roughly forty-three of the citizens that lives in Dignity Village. Before Grubic was homeless, his dad died and Grubic was left with the remainders of his father’s house. Grubic decided that he would remodel it and sell it, which he then used that money to buy himself his own home. After he bought himself his own home, a recession hit and Grubic lost his job.…

I had the opportunity to watch the documentary film Suburban America: Problems and Promises (9/2011). It was an overview of how the American suburbs have changed since they were planned and built in the 1950’s and 1960’s. The changes that focused on were political, aging infrastructure, ethnic, social, and redevelopment with an emphasis on creating a more sustainable vision. Looking at the current condition of many suburbs, it became evident to the film maker that the suburb as designed and built was not a sustainable development. The film’s content and people interviewed the film maker is reaching out to a variety of stakeholders, which includes college students (tomorrow’s leaders), politicians, developers, planners and those who populate suburbs today.…

I was travelled to some sustainable cities in the Northern Europe: Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, and Denmark. The trip explored me in every angle how environmental protection works, such as Education, government, societies, and technologies were all doing well in all over the world. Sweden has many great green design building which could lower the energy consumption of the building. Instead my parents bestowed upon me the intangibles to last a lifetime; hard work, compassion, selflessness and civility. I live in the tropics, on the island of St. Thomas. The displacement of BME and low-income groups leads to the issues of environmental gentrification. If city planners are working to increase green infrastructure within an impoverished community, will they find success in creating a healthier, “greener” space or in a wealthier, “whiter” space? Although plans for city green space include sustainable initiatives, they oftentimes lack the advocacy for environmental justice. This inadequacy depicts the concepts of sustainability and going green with a political intent rather than an environmental intent. Looking further into past environmental programs by the government of New York City, a common hypocritical theme is found.…

There is no place for children to run and play, and the public school system in Little Tokyo is suffering partly due to this lack of green space. These students and the members of the community deserve a public park rather than having to congregating in open space in the built environment. They have to be creative in their urban land use in accommodation for nature in the neighborhood by not only focusing on environmental scales but also the built environment. (“The Face of Little Tokyo Is Changing” by Valentina Cardenans and Gayle…

Ecological design is a major part of our coming future and is necessary for the prosperity of our species as caretakers for the world. Sim Van Der Ryn and Stuart Cowan, in their book Ecological Design, address five principles in design that will help to move society in the right direction. These principles are: solutions from your place, ecological accounting, designing with nature, everyone is a designer, and making nature visible. It has been over the course of the last century that building designers and engineers have neglected the entirety of environmental impacts that went into their buildings. They have built, I believe, from a strictly human perspective with regard only to what the majority wants.…

Reflection Paper on The Village (2004) In the film, The Village, a primitive society of people is influenced by the legends told by the elders, resulting in their containment within the boundaries of the village. They are held there by their belief in the existence of the creatures said to live just beyond the village in the surrounding woods. This belief system follows many of the claims made by Durkheim, including his views on the presence and power of the supernatural or divine. The Village demonstrates that a community that holds the same beliefs and respect for those beliefs may maintain social stability, though the foundation of their system may be false.…
