Eclecticic Leaders: Article Analysis

I really liked the article about innovation leaders and learning about the 6 qualities that make them ‘quietly’ stand out. It is so true (and unfortunate) that some of the best innovators and “leaders” are not recognized or talked about in the media as much as political or Hollywood issues. Nonetheless, the article mentions that the “six strands of innovation leaders” include: self-awareness, eclectic experience, mission-driven, synthesizing, story-telling, and business case ready. Of the six, the two that stand out the most to me are eclectic experience and story-telling. In terms of eclectic experience, these leaders are adaptable and don’t follow a singular path or way of thinking. Eclectic leaders must be able to balance human skills (communication) with productivity. Regarding storytelling, another article I found discussed the importance of storytelling within leaders because it allows them to “establish credibility and authenticity through telling the stories that they are living…their stories resonate, generating creativity, interaction and transformation”. I hadn’t considered how impactful storytelling could be, however it makes sense and is a creative way to get people excited about change, or to get people thinking more deeply about a situation. In my prior work experiences, group huddles and meetings about procedures and protocols were mundane and boring to sit through, but if storytelling elements were incorporated I think it would have encouraged us to speak up more and contribute to the
