Challenges Of Living In A Diverse Society

A diverse society is a variety of different people living together in a community. The people living in the community have many different cultural backgrounds, including various race, religion and tradition. Due to increased mobility and technological advances in the way we travel, the world is getting increasingly diverse, with the next country just a few hours away. This means that everyone can be exposed to different cultures when someone from another country comes to visit or even migrate to it, causing the society to become more diverse. It is more advantageous as the heterogeneous societies make the community of people more open and knowledgeable about the different cultures, making them able to understand and tolerate the unique customs and behaviours of each culture. For example, Singapore schools commemorate Racial Harmony Day on 21st July 1964. On this day, Singapore experienced racial riots. Racial Harmony Day is a way we celebrate diversity and it serves to remind our pupils that social division costs us dearly. It is a day for schools to reflect on, and celebrate our success as a harmonious nation and society built on a rich diversity of cultures and heritages. The students and teachers are encouraged to wear different ethnic costumes and the schools will organise some activities such as games and art and craft unique to each race to let the students learn and understand more about the different cultures in Singapore, avoiding other riots because of racial misunderstandings.
