He reached to his end table for the dog-eared Bible that lay there. He always kept it within easy reach. It had held the answers to so many of his quandaries over the years ever since his deacon father had given it to him those many decades ago. She saw his ashen face, down-turned mouth, slumped shoulders and knew it wasn’t good news. “What’s wrong, honey?” “The doc said there’s something wrong with my labs. He wants to do more tests.” He stood statue-like in the front hall alcove staring at himself in the mirror; as if evaluating his vulnerability. She moved to him, and, as best she could, encircled his huge frame in her arms. “Oh, it’s probably just a fluke. I’m sure the extra tests are just a precaution.” “No, I don’t think so. He looked especially concerned when he looked at my family history and saw that my mother, two aunts and an uncle all died of cancer.” “Well, that doesn’t mean it’s a certainty. We’ll hope and pray for the best.” She said this but it was without conviction—unconvinced by her own words. They fretted and held their breaths for two tortuous weeks awaiting the results. It was on a Friday morning they got the call. “John, I have your test results. I’d like you and Mary to come in this afternoon at 1:30 so I can go over them with you.” John only managed a mumbled “OK” before he punched the phone off and let it slide from his hand to the counter

Explication: Rameau’s Nephew This paper is an explication of a small passage from Denis Diderot’s dialogue, Rameau’s Nephew. First, I will begin by identifying the taxonomic elements I used to examine the text, and then go on to acknowledge the relationships between these elements and how they connect throughout the text. With this evidence, I will proceed by stating a few possibilities of meaning that might be observed in the passage and then tied to the rest of the dialogue.…

Ironically, Fahrenheit 451 is a banned book about a society where books are banned (Breazeale, Liz. " Why Is Fahrenheit 451 Banned?.") that has been criticized by society many times due to its violence, profanity, and especially offending many christians. Despite the book being about society rejecting literature to the point of banishment, some areas still challenged to remove the book from schools to give sensitive readers some form of reassurance that they and others will not encounter this book as well. In which, these acts defeat the entire purpose and existence of the book itself about warning the future generations of the possible dystopian society that they are heading towards. Ray Bradbury could not afford to attend college and decided…

Gonorrhea and syphilis are on the rise in the U.S., mostly in men who have sex with men (MSM), a trend the government said is linked to inadequate testing among people stymied by homophobia and limited access to health care. The rate of new gonorrhea cases rose 4 percent in 2012 from the year before, while syphilis jumped 11 percent, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said today in a report. Rates for chlamydia, the most common of the bacterial sexually transmitted diseases, gained less than 1 percent. While all three diseases are curable with antibiotics, many people don’t get tested as recommended, said Gail Bolan, the director of the CDC’s STD prevention division. That’s especially the case for syphilis, where the rise…
