Air pollution is a serious issue that affects the entire world. Motor vehicle use, factory output of sulfur-dioxide and carbon monoxide from burning fossil fuels, and the use of pesticides in agriculture which leads to high levels of ammonia, all contribute to the amount of air pollution in the atmosphere (Air pollution, n.d.). Not only are air pollutants depleting our ozone layer, they are also affecting the health of people. As nurses, it is important to be aware of the causes of illnesses in our community. The purpose of this paper is to answer the question, “To what affect does high levels of air pollution caused by traffic, factories, and agriculture have on the population exposed?” Research was conducted by searching key words from the PICOT question on the databases EBSCOhost and CINAHL. By researching similar studies, this paper hopes to demonstrate the probable health issues the towns of Ironridge and Summerville will face if no attempt for cleaner air is made.
