Ebonics Second Language

• A school board in Oakland, California voted to recognize Ebonics as a second language. This caused an uproar towards the African American communities who felt insulted by the board by comparing Ebonics to another language like Spanish or Chinese. Linguistic anthropologist, Marcyelina Morgan asserts that the African American community thinks that just cause this African American community speaks a variation of English, it doesn’t make them at an intellectual disadvantage and they shouldn’t be treated as such. This example intertwines with the idea of language ideology where people from different social forms speak differently. The sport has served as place to united people to feast their eyes on the sport they love so dearly. Yet, football has recently become a platform for athletes to express their opinions about the society and the government. In wake of Donald Trump’s remarks on those protesting during the national anthem, players started to kneel in refutation. Some athletes would even raise a closed fist up, which is a symbol for “black power” while they were kneeling during the national anthem. The flag is national symbolizes which stands for freedom, equality and peace. But, to others it doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing. But if you asked an African American male who’s been serving jail time for a crime he didn’t commit, he might not have the same answer.
