Doctors from all over the United States are trying to make a difference in healthcare in West Africa. The Ebola virus caused a vast amount of fatalities throughout West Africa over the 40 years this disease has been known of. Discovered by Dr. Peter Piot in 1976, health care professionals work hard to educate and to prevent the transmission of the disease as much as possible. The Ebola outbreak in 1976 differs from the outbreak in 2014 due to the education and information doctors have today. Education and Technology was more developed in 2014 and scientist had more resources. Due to the easy transmission of the disease strict quarantine protocol must be followed. Not …show more content…
The people of africa and healthcare professionals had no precautions or knowledge of this until Dr. Piot made a discovery. Dr. Peter Piot a recent graduate from medical school was finishing his training to become a clinical microbiologist during the first Ebola outbreak.(BBC News) In 1976 Dr.Piot was working in a lab in Belgium where he received two plastic vials that contained blood from a patient in Zaire. He received notice that more than two hundred people are becoming severely ill with this mysterious illness. Dr.Piot's team of resourceful microbiologist who assisted in the lab in Belgium suspected everyone was breaking out with yellow fever, which the lab they were working in The Institute of Tropical Medicine they were more than qualified to handle an outbreak of yellow fever, but little do they know they have the Ebola virus lurking in the vials of blood. Not knowing what virus was being contained wearing only latex gloves not quarantine protocol clothing they removed samples from the blood to run tests. Piot injected the blood into mice and after a couple weeks the mice were all dead. After the mice all died they studied the blood under a microscope and saw a massive worm structure which was similar to the size and shape of how the Marburg virus was detected. Collecting more blood samples from fellow scientist in the lab, the samples were sent to facility in America where they were qualified …show more content…
The virus is transmitted in multiple ways but there has to be direct contact with infected person's bodily fluids. People who resulted in fatality of the virus people cleaning the bodies for burial ceremonies cleaning wounds and coming in close contact with the body was infecting the workers because this virus infects your entire blood stream. (Rosen, 2002) Animals would even suffer from the Ebola virus making the disease easy to transmit from human to human. The Ebola virus is transmitted through direct contact with things such as broken skin, bodily organs, all bodily fluids, and even surface materials such as bedding and clothing that have things such as blood, sweat, or any other bodily fluid cause these items to be a transmitter. With more research it was discovered that the virus can be transmitted through sexual activity as well, because of this the virus was infecting full households. Due to the status of health care in Africa in 1976 health care workers would frequently be infected due to treating patients not knowing the proper quarantine protocol. Even after Piots discovery of the virus there was still not a clue on treatment plans and how to tackle the disease as a whole. This virus all together is problematic because it infects the entire blood stream and all vital organs making this disease a hard one to
