Though there are many schools of thought that are of the opinion and very pessimistic about the world now, being a better place than it used to be fifty years ago, I am very much convinced, and also of the opinion that, the world is a much better place to live in now than it was fifty years ago and also I am very optimistic about the continuous general progress and improvements in the world and also the well being of the people living in it.

Technology can be said to be the main driver of development now, and what is underpinning this is Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Information and Communication Technology has transformed the world into a global village now. People are able to communicate with others anywhere across the globe so easily and businesses are able to interact and even conclude deals and transactions in seconds using technology. This has facilitated development in many countries and also reduced significantly the cost of business travels. People and businesses are using tele conferencing Skype, emails and others as mediums of communicating and concluding business deals and transactions and this has been very effective and efficient. The advent of mobile phones has also brought about improvements in communications and the lifestyles and well being of people. People are able to use mobile phones to browse the internet, to do banking and also conclude other business transactions. Majority rule has taken over from dictatorship and autocratic regimes across the world. Though there are a few exceptions, many countries now have majority rule, and democracy is the preferred option of governance. Even in countries were majority rule is not in place efforts are being made to establish democracy. This is a very positive development as it has greatly enhanced world peace, growth and development. Governments now focus on improving the living standards of their people. This has brought about prosperity with income levels of a lot more people increasing as their countries develop. Currently world poverty is increasingly on the decline and a lot more people are wealthy than the situation was some fifty years ago.
Environmental pollution has been a major concern worldwide and currently a lot more countries are paying attention to the environment emphasizing the reduction of pollution and other effects that cause damage to the environment. Economies are now implementing major harmonized environmental control policies as safeguards to protect the environment.
