Take a moment and picture yourself a year from now. You probably imagine yourself being the same size or smaller than you are now. You probably want to be able to run/walk a mile without having huge heart or breathing issues. You probably want to be healthy. Well if most of us continue to eat the way we do, none of what you imagine will be possible. Americans need to start eating healthier. An unhealthy diet is linked to four of the world’s top ten leading risk factor that cause death: high blood pressure, high blood glucose, overweight and obesity and high cholesterol (“New Consent Rules Threaten Public Health”). One of the main reasons that people are more likely to eat unhealthy are when your parents display unhealthy eating habits and you learn from them. If your parents eat unhealthy, then you don’t eat healthy. Your parents have huge impacts on your life with everything you do. When you’re younger you eat what they make you. If your parents don’t make you healthy food then you don’t eat healthy. They most likely do the grocery shopping too, so if they buy the unhealthy food, then you don’t eat healthy. Even when you get older and start driving, it’s way easier to eat out all the time. Especially with being a teen. I know for me, it’s really hard to not just go and grab something before a practice or game or any other extra curricular activity when there isn’t enough time to make something yourself. Even after games it’s hard to not wanna stop for something quicker rather than having to go home and make something. Fast food is so much easier and that’s probably why people do it so often. Triglycerides are a form of a fat in your blood and having high levels of it can narrow or clog your arteries. This increases your risk for heart attack, stroke and heart disease. If your diet consists of processed meats, high in fat dairy products or fried foods, then you could have high cholesterol levels, which is another risk factor for heart disease (“Eating Unhealthy Affect You?”). Most of the unhealthy food that you eat can lead to poor cardiovascular health which has even greater effects on you in the long run. Unhealthy eating can lead to poor blood sugar control which leads to diabetes. Unhealthy eating can lead to weight gain. A blogger named Roni, who withheld her last name for her website, experienced weight gain throughout her high school and college years. She tried everything to lose it, but as soon as she did, she gained it right back. The constant weight gain had a huge effect on her self-esteem. It was hard for her to focus on anything with the constant worry of how she looked on her mind.
