Eating disorders have taken over the lives of athletes, specifically female dancers, for hundreds of years. The link between eating disorders and female dancers comes from the intense competition amongst the sport, and the constant pressure to be “fit” and conform to a certain body type standard. The research found throughout this text presents the relationship between eating disorders and female dancers, and the effects the disorder has on the body. Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder by way of self starvation. It is a disorder that can be very serious or even deadly. The effects that the disorder has on the physical and mental health of a person are tremendous. Anorexia starts mostly in teens facing pressure with self image, high stress levels, feelings of lack of self control, history of abusive relationships, or depression(Young 2008). These are a few of the most common reasons for why the disorder can be developed, but the disorder it is complex and can be deeply rooted. Research suggests that eating disorders can even be linked to chemicals in the brain that control the body’s desires to eat, hunger levels, etc. (Policy for the Prevention, Identification and Action on Disordered Eating). The disorder occurs as a result of a deadly cycle which is self-inflicted, so once someone develops the disorder, they typically go through continual phases of being intensely effected by…
