There are many types of eating disorders and numerous reasons on why certain people develop them. Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia and binge-eating disorder are very serious and at times can be fatal. When it comes to eating disorder people misunderstand the real cause of them. Eating disorders are almost never about food or the need to be thin but a person who is trying erase a painful memory or escape a stressful situation. A person is able to seek relief from these types of behaviors but by doing this may actually create more problems for themselves in the long run. Eating disorders are an illness, a person does not chose to have an eating disorder.
One of the main factors of an eating disorder is stress as discussed in chapter 12. Individuals who are stressed are more likely to develop an eating disorder because they may become overwhelmed and lead them to feel displaced. Studies show that there is no specific cause of eating disorders but they do have some factors that may tender to the problems. Eating disorders are most known amongst individuals who suffer from low self-esteem, problems with coping and expressing their emotions, someone who is impulsive, and someone who has feelings of failure. Genetics, environmental issues, someone’s culture and abnormal chemicals from an individual can also aid the eating disorder.
