I believe that movies, music, and television shows play an important role in influencing cultures. Especially well-known movies, like Easy Rider, could impact the viewers’ perceptions. This movie showed a “hippies” counter-culture (Ferris & Stein, 2014) in the U.S. that many Americans did not know about, such that they considered the behaviors in the culture to be deviant (Ferris & Stein, 2014) that they need to be punished. The way George and Billy were killed by the rednecks in the movie showed the way people exerted social control to increase conformity (Ferris & Stein, 2014).
