In a social experiment conducted by Solomon Asch of 1951, Asch studied the impact of how social pressure from the majority can affect a person to conform (McLeod). The experiment consisted of one participant in a group of actors and all were asked to match the test line to a line most similar. In revealing their answers, the participant was asked to answer last out of the group while the actors all purposely answered incorrectly. With over 12 trials of the experiment, nearly 75% of the participants conformed to answering the question incorrectly at least once. This trend of conformity is also seen in today’s social influence.…

Smoke Signals is unique among movies, in that it is the first feature film to be written, directed, co-produced, and starring Native American Indians. Most viewers of the film can easily pick up on how comfortable the creators are with its setting and its characters. We can sense that this was done by people who genuinely care about the Native American people at large. The film opens with a flashback to a Native American reservation in Idaho. In the scene the viewer watches as an infant, Thomas Builds-the Fire, one of the film’s two main characters, is rescued from a burning house by being thrown from a second story window, and is caught in the arms of Arnold Joseph.…

It brings Native America into contemporary times, with contemporary clothing, language, and technology. Victor and Thomas were possibly some of the first truly dynamic Native American characters in film because they finally had a chance to be. It relates Victor and Thomas to the general public with situations of the “geek and the jock”, the adventure of road trips, and self-discovery, but also issues of alcoholism and poverty that affect all races, but Native especially. I just hope one day I will not have to write about Native stereotypes versus the truth. I hope that these demeaning assumptions about so many beautiful and complex peoples are destroyed once and for all, and people can finally just be…

Given the option of purchasing a road bike from Target for $99 that comes equipped with 18 speeds, brakes and front suspension support or a basic “fixie” bike for an average $1,000, which comes with none of the aforementioned items, which would you prefer? Interestingly enough, many of Melbourne’s younger generation are choosing the latter option. A fixie bike is a bicycle that has no freewheel, meaning it cannot coast; the pedals are always in motion when the bicycle is moving. Fixie’s are associated with a young, hipster crowd; each individual rider identifies with other fixie riders because they ride the same bikes and a fixie culture is established.…
