Eastman Johnson was born in Lovell Maine in July 1824. He is most famous for his genres of paintings of scenes from everyday life. He was known as The American Rembrandt in his day. Johnson was a realistic painter in both subject matter and in execution. He focused mainly on important leaders and such as Abraham Lincoln. In 1844 Johnson moved to Washington, D.C., and began to draw crayon portraits. Johnson drew a portrait of John Quincy Adams, which was mantled in the National Portrait Gallery and a portrait of Dolley Madison, which was put in the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University.
