East Fox Squirrel Experiment

Introduction Squirrels are small rodents commonly known across the United States. There are over 200 squirrels species. They belong in the genius Scieridae(1). There size is varies from 5 inches to 3 feet long. The commonly known squirrel in Kansas is either the Eastern Fox Squirrel, its recorded size varies from 18-28 inches. The genus name for the Easter Fox Squirrel is Sciurus Niger(2). Animal activity can be measured in the observation of animals in a certain location. The Activity can vary in the observation of noise or sight. Animal activity in whole was to board to run a report over. Instead, there was always an abundance of squirrels in the woods. The factors involved in this experiment were the time of day and the weather. My purpose for the experiment was to determine if Squirrel Activity was greater in the morning compared to the evening. I hypothesized that Squirrel Activity would be greater in the morning at 7 a.m. than in the evening at 7p.m at the Campus Woods.

Squirrel Activity was measured by recording the number of squirrels observed within our groups designated walk. Every morning and every evening for 3 days straight we would walk 400 meters into the woods and 400 meter out, a total walk and observation time period of a half mile. In the mornings we would walk at exactly 7a.m. and in the evening we would walk at exactly 7p.m. Our lab group would simply use a notebook to record the number of squirrels observed on our walk, the weather which included the temperature, and the time of
