“Earworms” is a funny name for those songs that get stuck in your head. If you think about it, they attach themselves to you. People get songs stuck in their heads for a few different reasons. A quote from James Kellaris, a professor at the University of Cincinnati says, “there are general patterns of characteristics for songs that frequently get stuck, such as being simple, repetitive, and having mild incongruity,” songs that are easier to sing or easier to memorize, with less words seem to get stuck more easily. We all get earworms once in awhile some more often than others. A study found by the 10th International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition discovered that “ more than 91 percent of people reported having an earworm at least

The healing power of maggots is not new. Human beings have discovered it several times. The Maya are said to have used maggots for therapeutic purposes a thousand years ago. As early as the sixteenth century, European doctors noticed that soldiers with maggot-infested wounds healed well. More recently, doctors have realized that maggots can be cheaper and more effective than drugs in some respects, and these squirming larvae have, at times, enjoyed a quiet medical renaissance.…

Aaron Copland illustrates the difference between songs and music in his essay, “How We Listen.” There are certain songs and music that will mean the same thing every time someone listens to the songs or music, which will eventually become “dull music”; however, there are also other songs and music whose “meaning is slightly different with each hearing, [which will have] a greater chance of remaining alive” (Copland 2). Songs that become dull with each hearing are often the ones that are overplayed on the radio; they also have repetitive and generic elements. Essentially, the dull songs “always say the same thing” or are similar to the songs sung by previous artists. (Copland 2).…

They asked people to describe the songs stuck in their heads, and found that very few songs occurred more than once. People did tend to report songs like Jingle Bells around the holidays, and pop songs that were constantly on the radio showed up a lot more in the answers too. In another part of the study Williamson and her team with the BBC, surveying radio listeners to try and figure out what gave them earworms. Unsurpisingly, the most common cause was recent or repeated exposre to a song.…

Many of us can look back on our adolescence and be mortified by some of the interests and choices we made. Our adult brains make us wonder what we were thinking when we chose to listen to same song on repeat from a band that we now can’t believe we liked. In my case, I can think back to a few musicians I had once loved and now listen in confusion at their appeal and ponder how it was that my mother did not go crazy. The quality of vehicle allows me to make trips and travel while only having the option of listening to the radio. Sometimes, I spend an entire trek searching for a song I like and occasionally come up short.…

I found an article from the Wall Street Journal website and an article from the American Psychological Association called “Music as Medicine”. But the source that proved most powerful was my sister, Rosie Stevens. I talked to her for the interview and she told me a lot about her music therapy and how it helps her decrease sensory overloads and improves her ability to be in loud places without earbuds. I listened to what she has to listen to everyday, common songs that she hears on the radio or on shuffle on iTunes. The big differences are that the songs switch sound from ear to ear and consist of different vocalists singing the same songs……
