Earthteam Personal Statement

Ever since my family's near-death experience of my brother being in a heart attack while on a family trip to disneyland during my sophomore year, leadership has become a big part of my life; it has become a passion.
Joining EarthTeam during my senior year of high school was a way for me to use my voice and leadership skills. EarthTeam is an internship that meets once a week after school focusing on implementing and educating students about the three bin system. The reason why I joined EarthTeam is because I want to change the habits of Oakland Tech’s students and also positively impact the community. Oakland Technical high school is a diverse school located in the city. The school is encompassed with an abundance of fast food restaurants and students are given the liberty to have off campus lunch. Because of this, the school generates a lot of trash.
While I was in this program, I felt enthusiastic and determined. Although EarthTeam only meets once a week after school, it requires a lot of work, time, and commitment in order to implement the change. So far I have done waste audits, generate

When we were presenting to classrooms to teach students about the implementation of the 3-bin system, half of my group members did not show up. Thus, I stepped up to present the powerpoint all by myself and help my partner with the bingo game and survey. As a member of EarthTeam, I have become a role model for the school. Everyday, I would tell my friends what goes in each bin and remind teachers to clear their bins in the stations.
My extensive passion for using my leadership skills allowed me to give back to the community. I believe that going into the Business Economics major will allow me to develop skills that can allow me to understand the connections between business organizations and individuals in order to work with low income families to create programs that can help improve their economic

For the summer of 2016 I decided it would be a great idea to do work study for Trio Upward Bound at Delaware Technical & Community College. While there I did any errands that had to be done, record attendance, or file papers. This experience met my expectations as I had expected to help my supervisor in any way possible and do any office work that needed to be done. By only having done this, I knew I had contributed to the program because even the littlest help can save others time and work. Having done this work study was not a difficult task for me as I possess few skills and knowledge that helped me through it.…

I earned my first leadership role at the age of two. At that age, I became my sister’s role model. It was up to me to teach her the tricks of the trade for everything-- from tying her shoes to studying for her first math test. Although I didn’t have any designated leadership positions during my early years of high school, it was the similarly intimate, accidental moments of leadership that colored my participation in my extracurriculars.…

Barbecue sauce mixed with morning dew smeared across the endless rows of white tables was the first sight that greeted the volunteers of the Burlington Ribfest. It was the first image that my best friend and I could not help, but commit to memory. Eager as we both were to get volunteer hours, I signed us up for multiple shifts as part of the ECO recycling team, totaling up to 12 hours. Little did I know, this adventure would change me in a way only direct experience could.…

I created a broadcasting club called The Scorpion Scoop, which I feel has changed the attitude of Sedona Red Rock High School. The club effectively televises school announcements to the student body in a humorous manner, so the students pay attention to important information. I have tried to start this club in the past, but was continuously told it was too much of a challenge and would not work out. The rejection just made me more ambitious to establish this important club, as I would not take no for an answer. Few supported my idea to create this club, until one of my close friends decided to help.…

Leadership is imperative to supporting the foundation of succession in our society. It is important that we exercise our God given right to utilize our sphere of influence to the best of our abilities. Although leadership may gain you more recognition throughout society it is not about the affluence one can acquire; leading is solely about guiding others down a path of success so that future generations can more easily learn from our mistakes to pass down to the next generation. That is why I believe mentoring and any position of leadership should be central to young adults to set the example for the impactful youth. I found my sphere of influence to be within the academic driven chapter of the National Honor Society which in my senior year I was elected president.…

Potential Vice-President of the Class of 2018 As stated by John C. Maxwell, “A leader is on who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” Through my vice-presidency during my sophomore year in high school, multiple band leadership roles, and experience with assisting children during Vacation Bible School as a group leader for various summers, I have become a skilled leader. Additionally, I tend to be known as the kind of student who is looked up to by many due to my high grades, my caring personality, my determination, and my ability to follow instructions.…

There was one particular year when the band had undergone a number of changes. We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In a community, being a leader is often difficult due to all the components and struggles that go into being one. A leader is an individual who can take charge in various situations, and do it effectively in a way which makes others follow them. Throughout my years, I have grown from being a primarily shy person to someone who is not afraid to step up and be the leader I am now. Today, I am able to consistently demonstrate what it is to be a leader in my daily life. Although coming into high school as a freshman was intimidating for me, I knew that in order to succeed, I needed to open up and try something new.…

Studying business in Carnegie Mellon provides the education that is needed to succeed in these fields, and earning the degree can definitely help me and encourage me to keep working on myself. Having my family members who study business the same time as I do encourages me to pursue it because I can have many resources of consultation and education. Watching the Middle East grow with young business leaders makes me curious on how they started small and how they started growing big, and this major can give me the knowledge that I need to become a leader. A friend of mine has started a small business and helping her has exposed me to a small part of the business world and how hard it is to manage it correctly. Living in Saudi Arabia has been a great experience and it has also exposed me to the works and businesses of the many young adults who have started from scratch and who talk about their journey.…

Despite my general failure to take risks, participating in IGD taught me a variety of vital intergroup relations skills. In terms of course aspects, the Uncommon Ground activity was the greatest proponent of my development, as it forced me to realize the unfair assumptions I made about others and their lived realities. These assumptions were primarily rooted in more apparent aspects of identity, such as skin color and gender, and they were problematic because they led to a marginalization of the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of people who are so much more than what I could determine from appearances. In acknowledging this habit to assume, I have emerged with a new mentality, one that is much more open minded and empathetic towards…

The most gratifying experience I have had in college is my involvement in the Youth Media Advocacy Project (YMAP). YMAP is a multifaceted course and service learning project offered through the School for Social Change at Carlow University. YMAP prepares Carlow students as advocates and facilitates research about the condition of Pittsburgh Public schools. As a participant, I was deployed into a high school to serve as a mentor to students and assist them in uncovering an issue within their school that they felt passionately about changing.…

As a result, students start to realize how much they have the ability to make a difference. These life-changing experiences shape how youth interact with their…
