Earthquake In San Fransisco, Mexico

The amount of monetary damage from an earthquake and the loss of life, depends on the type of soil, the retrofitting of the land, and how dense the population of that city is. In 1989, San Fransisco, California, was hit with a 15-second earthquake; the earthquake was 7.1 in magnitude. The fault of this earthquake was on the San Andres fault line. The damage from this earthquake was very severe, roadways were torn apart, and houses were destroyed. The area of the most damage was built on poor ground conditions, and sandy and loose soil. Since houses were torn apart, gas lines that went to those houses started fires and the fires took a full block of homes. Since 1989 the town of San Francisco is being prepared, and are anticipating more earthquakes daily. Mexico City, Mexico, was hit with a 90 second 8.1 magnitude earthquake. The city was built on a old lake, so the soil was not good. However, after the earthquake the Mexican government sent troops, not to help with the casualties but to keep order. So the citizens of Mexico City helped out, stranger helping stranger to help save lives. This earthquake in particular is special because there were two earthquakes but only the second one was much stronger (8.2) than the first. To retrofit the building for modern day life, the buildings are wrapped in steel beams for extra support. To warn the citizens of Mexico there are warning sirens that allow up to 70 seconds so that people can find somewhere safe to minimize
