While society as a whole is becoming more acceptant of different races and cultures there is still a shocking lack of representation of these different races and cultures in film. I agree with the point you made, we can't create a scapegoat white people for the reason black people aren't being recognized for their roles in movies. There is an actual problem with the Hollywood industry. Dave Chappelle said in this video that some male black actors are given roles where they have to dress up as women. They aren't given the main role or cast in many dramatic movies. This is a tricky issue because we can't get upset at people for what movie they like better.…

The video that I chose is from this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, which celebrates works of excellence in the television industry. It’s Viola Davis’ acceptance speech after she won the Emmy Award for Best Actress in a drama series. She became the first African-American women in the ceremony’s 67-year history to win in that category. She used this large platform as an opportunity to address the lack of diversity in the entertainment industry and what essentially stands in the way of women of color to be successful.…

Picture this: You’re watching a movie that takes place in Africa. The narrator says, “Look at those zebras!” but the camera zooms in on elephants. It would be confusing and wouldn’t make sense, right? So why is it that movies do the same thing with their actors?…

It's safe to say that the end of the world has been a topic of speculation and fascination throughout human history. I would guess that's what makes it such a popular theme in the media. Most often, the post apocalyptic narrative shows up in genres like dystopian fiction, fantasy, and science fiction. Recently, I finished reading a dystopian fiction by Emily St. John Mandel entitled, Station Eleven. Although I don't actively read dystopian fiction, the few that I have read were impressionable, and Station Eleven was not much different.…

Stereotypes of people of color and minority races have been around for many years, and have proved themselves to dominate the perception of people of color in everyday life. Films portray people of color as they are perceived by white Americans, not how they truly are, unique. Film has only dirtied the minority races’ image over time, though if the movies were not made by other Americans, they were more accurate to their race. Stereotypes of Asians have been around for a long time, ever since Asians were introduced. Stereotypes such as Asian students are smarter, Asian women are more exotic and tend to wait on men, Asian women are submissive, Asian people are all from China, and many others.…

Media has made it clear that only white male characters ended up being the hero in the end and everyone else was not important. Non-white characters may have been put in the movie to show to the audience that they do not want to be raciest, but they always ended up dying in the movie anyways. Being white was your ticket of reaching goals easier than minorities. Yet, minorities outnumber whites in some states, we still see more whites holding positions of power. Our day in age, we can hope to see more minorities reaching that glass ceiling and breaking…

Diversity in America has been rising every year. Lately the country’s diverseness has skyrocketed since the legalization of gay marriage. The media is meant to represent the diversity of the country and represent the common people and the number of gay and colored people has shot up immensely within the last 20 years but the media has failed to keep up with this. Most people, white, straight and usually male, feel that the media represents them perfectly and it does. But for the people that are colored, transgender, gay or sometimes female feel that the media does not have enough representation for them and they feel as though the country does not acknowledge the fact that they exist.…

Whenever you view a film you will realize that not everything is going to be represented on the screen. The same thing happens in melodrama, many of the films we have viewed in class have only presented us wither certain things, which ultimately poses a question, what do we not get to see? So far the stories told on the screen mostly concern straight, white females or males, with middle class to wealthy incomes, which leaves room for many different types of people that aren’t having their stories told. So far none of the films have depicted any major Black characters, the film Heartburn has a minor character that is the maid for Meryl Streep’s father, but the audience never gets to hear her story since she mostly is there for comic relief.…
