This can also be compared to Millennials and their technology. Millennials tend to stay on their phones or laptops more because it is something they grew up with. They grew up with technology constantly changing and advancing, therefore they continues to learn and use what they were given. Once Ish learned to understand that teaching the children arithmetic, reading, and writing was useless he taught them things that he felt would help them more. Ish taught the children how to make bow and arrows, along with how to make fire without lighting a match. After Ish’s son Walt comes back from being outside he says, “‘I hid behind a bush, and waited till [the rabbit] hopped up close to me, and then I shot him right through.’” (in Stewart, 293) The children eventually lose interest in the bow and arrows, but Ish knowns that teaching them how to use bow arrows will pay off in the future. In the future the next generation will rely less on scavenging for can goods. Either Millennials grew up buying their own technology, or Millennial’s parents gave their children technology when they were younger. Ish is extremely smart, but he never thought about the fact that the world would never go back to how it was.
