Indepence from Early School Starts Times
Due to the course of human events, like being forced to get out of bed outrageously early, thus having trouble focusing in class due to the extreme fatigue it has caused me, I declare my separation from the school’s early morning schedule.
We stand together, defending the right to sleep in, with time to prepare for the day ahead. Actions must be taken, such as being provided with more time in the morning before school. Us, hard working students, deserve to be pleasant and well-rested; don’t you remember sleeping in and being elated? It is proven that waking up later in the day, increases the probability of the presence of happiness in students by forty-two percent. It is our duty as a student to separate ourselves from early start times for our futures. Us the students can break the board of education. The Board of education is ruining our futures by forcing us to wake up early making us tired in our most important classes.

School times can sometimes be absurdly early, but because of later start times some problems stir up. Later school start times can increase grades and the well being of the kids, but the downfall of that is that schools have to pay extra for more buses because usually a district only has a few busses, which then makes the school start times staggered. Although the wellbeing of kids is far more important. The idea of staggering school time is smart but if its hurting the health of people I would pay the extra money to keep kids safe. The first reason that school should start later is because it will allow kids to be more well rested and makes it easier to focus.…

A common argument against a later start time is bus tiers. The Morning Edition, an American radio news program, did a segment with a woman named Michelle Trudeau titled “High School Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens.” She speaks on the effect of school start time and discusses how one of the key roadblocks to changing school start times is the bus tier and extensive transportation scheduling (“High School Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens”). It is important to recognises this as something people try to use against a later start time, because it is a fair and valid point, but also one that can be overcome. It is a roadblock for a later start time simply because of how intricate and fine tuned a bus schedule is.…

Over the past ten years there have been several issues pertaining to why school should start later in the day. Many parents, teachers, and board leaders have tried pushing the issues so that the start time will change, but not a whole lot has happened. There are schools in all fifty states that want to jump on board and start school later, so why not just do it? It’s way easier said than done. Kids in middle school and in high school think that they are exhausted because they wake up to go to school, but the one reason why they are exhausted in the mornings is because they don't get enough sleep. In the passage "Keep Start Times as They Are," by unknown author, I agree that the times should stay the same because if the times change then the kids will go to sleep later because school will start later. First of all, kids who go to sleep a liitle late will be tired in the morning because they have to go to school. The unknown author states,"They will have to go to sleep earlier if they are forced to wake up earlier," (1).…

Students who start earlier in the day have more time for after-school activities such as jobs, sports, homework etc. (Anderson). The problem of inadequate sleep affects more segments of our society than adolescents but, adolescents appear to be particularly vulnerable and face difficult challenges for obtaining sufficient sleep (Adolescent Sleep Needs and School Starting Times). “Even without the pressure of biological changes, if we combine an early school starting time-say 7:30a.m which, with a modest commute, makes 6:15a.m a viable rising time- without knowledge that optimal sleep need is 9 ¼ hours, we are asking that 16-year-olds go to bed at 9p.m” (Adolescent Sleep Needs and School Starting Times). It is hard for a teen to go to bed at 9p.m, especially if they have homework and studying to do.…

It has become troublesome and confusing to me as to why our local school district would require children in intermediate school (10 to 12 years old) to start school at 7:40 a.m. Please note that this is their start time and doesn’t include their actual wake up time, prep time and travel to school. As I began to research this more in depth I was stunned to find the numerous effects and potential effects in relation to academics, physiological and the emotional distress it could have on students. My wife and I also reached out to other students’ parents and became even more intrigued as that they shared the same concerns and problems they recently were seeing in their own children. I honestly believe when something becomes more personal…

For many years, high school students have been complaining that school starts too early which results in their being denied sufficient sleep. While some people might argue that students claiming inadequate sleep could simply manage their time better, research conducted into the natural sleep patterns of adolescents supports the hypothesis that they naturally go to bed later and wake up much later. Studies that show adolescent's who start their days too early experience conflict with their natural Circadian rhythms. As a result, most high school students do not experience a state of being fully awake and at peak awareness until about 8:30AM. It follows that beginning classes prior 8:30 AM compromises maximum productivity as it cannot be convincingly argued that school should begin before students are fully awake and aware.…

Most schools are starting to make school hours start a little too early and it’s starting to cause problems. It has been shown that students’ behaviors are starting to change a lot since the change of school hours. Although some may prefer getting up early, Central High School should push the school hours back because it would reduce absences/tardies, it would improve students’ grades, and it would cause less behavior issues. Lots of people are not morning people, implying that they don’t like waking up early. With that being said, some students move slow when they wake up in the morning for school which causes them to be late.…

High schools should for a fact not ban students from transportation to and from school. As for consequences, sudents have to learn from the mistakes they make with the liability within the campus. If a student may not take the cause to blame then the student may not think wisely afterwards. However, faculty and staff have the right to drive to school, why should students be any different. Furthermore, while earlier start times may encourage adolescents to be responsible for managing their time to get ready and be on time for school, teens would create poor sleep habits as they develop anxiety and stress from being required to wake up early. Furthermore, even if they would have to face trying to manage their extracurricular activities, students would be able to sleep earlier and wake up the next morning to finish school responsibilities while gaining concentration from meeting the recommended hours of sleep. Without a doubt, if schools change their starting times later, one major leap is taken to ensure students’ and teachers’ sleep needs are met so that they are able to sleep and function during the school…
