Early School Should Start Later Essay

We all know that feeling. Alarm clock ringing, so tired you could sleep through a war, but then you get up. Eventually you get ready and go to school. When you get back to your domicile you realize you have not a sole idea of what any of the teachers said during school. Why, because you were so tired. This needs to change. Early school hours are preventing many students and young teachers from getting the sleep they need. This is a huge problem and is often overlooked. Not having enough sleep may not seem very serious, but it is. School needs to start later because students aren't getting enough sleep, which affects their health negatively, and it makes them fall asleep in class.

First and foremost, kids are not getting enough sleep. According to sleep calculator.com people 12 to 18 years old need at least 9 to 11 hours of sleep. Yet according to a survey I conducted, 40 out of 60 people, or two out of three sleep at 10 o'clock or later. And 1 out of 6 people go to sleep at 9:30. Only 1 out of 6 people sleep at 9 p.m. or earlier. And since most people have to wake up at 6:30 or earlier, that means that people who sleep at 10 p.m. are only getting eight and a half hours or less of sleep. And the minimum is 9 hours. If school started not more than 30 minutes later kids would be getting the minimum amount of sleep they need. That is to say I usually only get between 7-9 hours of sleep too. All things considered, it's very obvious

According to Russel Foster, “The suggestion is that long-term sleep deprivation might be an important factor in predisposing people to conditions such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension.” The concept that lack of sleep can cause obesity makes a lot of sense if people actually thought about it. When a person is tired and then they eat something, they are too tired to get up to burn off the calories they just ate. If someone does that every day due to chronic sleep deprivation, then they will gain weight. Another thing that happens when your body lacks sleep is it will go into a survival mode where it will try to conserve all of the energy it has which means instead of burning calories, it will save all of the ones that the person consumes to get energy that they are depriving their body of when they don’t get enough sleep.…

According to a research conducted by Mary Carskadon in (2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2011), she has found that adolescents sleep an average of 9 hours and 25 minutes. And Carskadon also found that older adolescents are often more sleepy during the day than are younger adolescents. In fact, her research suggests that adolescent biological clocks undergo a hormonal phase shift as they get older, because the shift was cause by a delay in the nightly presence of the hormone melatonin produce by the pineal gland found in the brain. The reasons why some middle school and high school students can’t get enough sleep is because they stay up late watching tv, playing video games, surfing the Internet and the like. This problem can be solved by parents giving their child strict rules about how long they can stay up at night. But some parents don’t usually do that, and just let their kids do what they want to do. Well, there are also parents who actually do that, but some kids can be rebels (like me, for example) and not actually follow the rules. Sometimes, it’s the student’s fault why they can’t get enough sleep.…

Every day a person finds he or she has more work with less time to do that work, but is sacrificing the sleep worth it? Sleep is an important aspect of life and without it one will find uncomfortable and eventually unbearable consequences. Although some may believe that they have the ability to train their bodies to require less sleep, it is impossible. The body needs sleep to regenerate certain parts of the body, especially the brain. After periods of time with little to know sleep one will know immediate side-effects of the brain not being able to restore and repair it’s own neurons (Lancaster, 2008).The brain is one of the most complex and least understood things in the world and without sleep there can be severe damage to this.…

The mass amount of homework, projects due on the same day, and studying for tests are not allowing students to have the proper sleep, which is the main reason why schools should allow naps for students. From personal experience, I have noticed how I focus more and get my work done faster when I get more sleep. This year the school had it changed that the high schoolers would start school the earliest out of the three schools: Elementary, Middle, and High School. Little kids have no problem getting up early considering the fact that they are not up all night doing homework, they get to go to sleep at a reasonable time. As the oldest kids, who have the most homework, it would only make sense that we start school later so that we can get more sleep and come to school more prepared. Schools should start later so…
