Students were placed into groups of two with one special education teacher. Only one group had one student.
• Early Numeracy Curriculum is designed to help students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. Part of the math concepts being taught included calendar skills and number identification.
• Students used systematic and expressive approaches to exhibit their answers to the teacher.
• Teachers all participated in training before beginning the study.
Results-
All students who participated in the study showed gains in their early numeracy skills. Students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities in this study improved their basic math skills using a systematic instruction and repeated practice using the skills. The researchers also found that using a scripted text for the teachers allowed the teachers to have support when teaching the concepts to the students. Before the study was conducted, the students selected to participate had shown no gains in early numeracy
