Most of the time companies or corporations did not directly state that they were firing an employee because of their orientation. However, until 2011, the US Army had a policy that directly required any openly gay individuals to leave the army (“Gay”). Also, many times adequate medical attention was not given to queer people, including testing for sexually transmitted diseases and counseling, because of their sexual orientation (Clifton). Another issue with how medical services have treated gays is that the majority of the states in America did not allow homosexual couples the same visitation rights that heterosexual couples had access to (Clifton). In the early 1900s, police arrest for sodomy began to rapidly increase until a point in 1920 where the police arrested over 500 male homosexuals in New York City each year(Newman). As Amnesty International USA found, through a report that was over 150 pages, police officers frequently targeted transgender and gay individuals of color. They have received abuse in numerous ways, such as sexual, emotional, and physical (Poirer). One of many horrible instances of police abuse happened to Mariah Lopez. Some people believe that the police targeted transgender woman, Lopez, because of her gender identity (“No”). Police officers majorly harassed Lopez. The police officers asked her to go into the men's cell, but she refused. This lead to the police officers handcuffing her and tying her legs together, then dragging her into the men's cell. After she got into the cell, the police officers physically harassed her; they beat her, hit her head, pushed her face to the floor, and kicked her genitals (“No”). Another LGBT victim of police harassment was Christina Sforza. Sforza was an innocent, bi-racial and transgender women who faced a horrible circumstance simply because of her gender identity. Sforza was in a bathroom in McDonalds stall injecting her vital insulin shot when the supposed manager came into the stall and began beating Sforza with a metal pipe.
