Early Geometry

After exploring geometry in all types of variations and activities since the beginning of the school year, on October 18th, 2015 I have planned to introduce the children in the 4’s class to an activity that supports spatial visualization and imagery. According to Douglas H. Clements and Julie Sarama, the authors of Learning and Teaching Early Math (2014), the ability to engage in visual imagery and spatial visualization is one of the most powerful operations in human cognition. This ability is particularly useful for problem solving as it allows imagining solutions to problems. More importantly, spatial visualization and imagery is essential human ability that contributes to mathematical ability, especially when it comes to geometry. As a preschool …show more content…
As indicated by NAEYC, preschoolers are capable of identifying some of the geometric shapes (circle, triangles, squares, rectangles and ovals), use related vocabulary as well as compare and contrast shapes. According to the Common Core Standards for Preschools (PK.G), through participation in this activity, the children will gain an ability to describe objects in the environment using names of shapes and to describe the relative position of these objects using terms such as top, bottom, up, down, in front of, behind, over, under, and next to as well as correctly name and position shapes regardless of size. In addition, by engaging in this activity, students will use their physical, language, and cognitive skills. The children will use their fine motor skills as well as their eye-hand coordination as they will move and pick up pattern blocks, they will use geometry related vocabulary, engage in a conversation with a teacher, they will move from matching to duplicating stage which is more complex ability as well as they will use their cognitive/ thinking/spatial visualization skills to use correct motions to place them in accurate direction and amount. Preschoolers develop spatial visualization skills by working from two perspectives on space as they examine the shapes of objects and inspect their relative position. This lesson provides hands-on experience for the students to use their spatial abilities as well as use, and apply their previous knowledge about different shapes and patterns. In addition, using pattern blocks with 4 year-olds to duplicate a picture with three-dimensional shapes will enhance their problem-solving skills while arranging shapes to create recognizable objects/duplicate a

Good morning Ms Gianotti and fellow classmates. For this term’s child studies assessment, I have designed a toy for 2-3-year-old called the “Art Geo Board”. The art geo board is a kids toy to encourage them to learn more about shapes, colours, numbers, alphabet, objects, pattern, counting and symmetry. It is a wooden board with pegs you can string rubber bands around and fairly simple to make and cheap fun. I made this toy for under $12 in materials and completed in less than an hour.…

MODULE 3: Aboriginal Perspective Activity for Children The Dreamtime story chosen to support and create an Aboriginal perspective in a mathematical activity is ‘How the Murray River was made’ a Bangerang story told by Irene Thomas. A story about a woman, walking with her three Dingos’ holding a wooden stick in her hand, dragging it along the ground as she walked. The Toonatpan (snake) slithered after the old woman, where she had made a mark in the ground, making it bigger. The Toonatpan was angry because of the noise the old Lady made and followed her; thrashing about making the indentation left behind by her stick bigger.…

One activity that changed the way I think of math was Activity 11.29. In this activity is was about collecting 10,000 items. Out of Sight and Out of Mind? Infants demonstrate rapid cognitive advances throughout their first years. These cognitive skills encompass a child’s ability to think, learn, understand, and remember. Although not initially apparent, from birth, children immediately begin to absorb information and build a foundation for further development. Everyday interactions and experiences create new connections and foster a child’s willingness to explore and make sense of the world around them.…

Geometry and Eratosthenes In Professor Russ physical science class, there’s a plethora of subjects you, as a student, are bound to cover. This semester we had discuss over twenty different fields of science; the first being Geometry and Eratosthenes computing circumference of earth. We started the final semester off with two worksheets. The first was the “Angles of a Triangle”, we had to cut out the three angles of the triangle and piece them together in a shape.…

As I child growing I vaguely remember learning mathematical ideas. Unfortunately, it is common for adults to have lasting negative ideas about mathematics due to the way in which the concepts were presented to us as children. Is it therefore very important that we are able to scaffold children's learning in such a way that they do not feel confused or lose their enthusiasm for mathematics. Children who are learning mathematical skills need supportive adults who recognise the importance of this and are able to foster feelings of interest and achievement in the subject.…

In this theory learning is viewed as schema or mental constructions and learning is defined as changes in the child’s schemata. This theory focuses on the information coming in, that information being processed. Learning is then defined by changes in the child’s schemata. Children in the age group of three to six years can develop this theory through using an activity of one to one matching. This can be done after the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears where the children can be asked to go to the dramatic centre and set the table using dolls and bowls.…

My chosen area of mathematics is angles in polygons, due to the visual nature of geometry enabling the students to be engaged and stimulated (Chambers & Timlin, 2013). Not only this, but since geometry is present in our everyday lives, students have a basic grasp of shapes, however, they have not developed a critical understanding of what properties define that shape (Bell et al., 1983). This basic foundation knowledge can also cause difficulty when it comes to teaching and learning as the students have solidified these ideals in their mind. With this in mind, my Year 10 classes in which I taught these lessons come from a variety of schools, from various areas as well as some students who have been home-schooled, and as a result the students…

The use of graphs, diagrams, equations, prototypes, manipulatives, simulations, and other forms of conceptual models provide teachers and students with tools that can enhance the learning experience in advanced science classes. At first glance, it would seem that achievement in science should directly correlate with mathematics achievement because of the mathematics skills often needed to construct graphs or solve mathematical equations common in physical science disciplines. Upon further study, it seems the mathematical ability specifically related to geometry, scale, and orientation are most likely to accurately predict achievement in science classes like physics and chemistry (Pallrand & Seeber, 1984). It seems a student’s spatial ability…

Multiples and factors were also introduced to the children at a younger age in a concrete way which is kept separately so that they child does not become confused by them. They are then introduced again simultaneously, and the children can now become aware of patterns in number because of the coloured beads which are used. Finally, we should keep in mind that the aim of work in math and geometry within the Montessori classroom is not simplify the success of skills, it is to help keep the order and beauty of mathematics and the development of the…
