Early English Settlers: Roanoke, Jamestown

When the English settlers attained the new world, their expectation of living was changed by many adversities. These obstacles were hard to surpass, but from these obstacle many lessons and values were learned and applied to the new world. Many of these lessons and values did not vanish through time, but they contributed to the formation of a government that to this present day cherishes these lessons and values. The settlers arrived in many regions of the new world, among these regions were Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. Roanoke also known as " the lost colony" was the first colony established by the English and was unsuccessful. In 1585, an explorer named Sir Walter Raleigh discovered an island near the state we today call Virginia. …show more content…
In 1606, King James I of England launched an expedition to the new world. In charge of this expedition was a company named Virginia, with the goal of creating a settlement in the new world with the intent of making the crown richer by finding gold and silver. Accompany by one hundred crew members and three ships, the company attained the new world on May 14, 1607 along a river they called James River. Similar to the Roanoke, the new settlers experienced famine and Indian attacks. Unlike the colonists of Roanoke, the settlers of Jamestown created a town in the middle of a triangle to protect themselves from Indian attacks; at that time the town contained a church and few houses. The construction of the town made it safer for the settlers, but the food shortage was unresolved. Therefore, accompanied by forty members with two ships, Newport decided to return to England. After Newport’s departure, the gravity of the problems worsen. Compared to the Roanoke's colonists, Jamestown's settlers created an alliance with less aggressive Indian tribes. Consequently, the Englishman learned from the tribes how to grow tobacco and corn, and the threat from the other Indian Tribes diminished. The production and the exportation of corn and tobacco enriched the colony. As the colony getting richer, new laws emerged. Then in 1619, the first general assemble was created, which constituted mainly of landowners. Due to the fact Jamestown was a success, In 1624, King James declared Jamestown the first crown
