Early Childhood Professionalism Essay

Professionalism is the competence expected and presented by a professional, and among teachers it is important to exhibit professionalism in their careers. Presenting oneself as a professional is important as it will affect their career. A teacher not presenting themselves as a professional can result in students not showing respect towards them, their colleagues not taking them seriously, parents being concerned with their child’s learning, and the certainty of putting a career at risk. Teachers must know how to present themselves with different groups of people, and fully know the roles they must take with these different types of groups. They have to show compassion for their students but understand that there is a difference between caring and being a friend. If students view their teacher as a friend, then they will put their authority at risk. However, if they do not show compassion, students will be intimidated and might not want to open up to the teacher which may affect their learning. In Early Childhood, there is little to no chance in the educator’s being the student’s friend. It is much easier as the child will view the teacher as an adult. Despite that the teacher must know how to take control of any situation as young children are not as focused in their current stage in life. However, there should not be too much control as the child might be intimidated or even worse, fear the teacher. The child might not get the chance to learn as they may feel discouraged as they do not want to make the teacher angry or get in trouble. Early childhood is the time for children to grow and being learning about their world, and they need the guidance from their teacher to encourage that growth.
