I performed this game assessment on April 20, 2017. I asked their teacher when it would be a good time for me to pull out my focal child and another student and she told me that after lunch would be best. This was because when they came back from lunch there would only be two periods left, writing and science, before the school day ended. And since it was a nice day they would be going outside to the playground during science. So during writing, which is from 1:42 to 2:22, I had enough time to do my game assignment. So at around 1:45 I prepared all my materials and layed them outside on the floor. For the conservation game I had prepared 2 plastic cups, of the same size, that were filled equally with water. I used red food coloring …show more content…
Giselle hands them a cup filled with coins, square chips, and die of different colors and sizes. This included, 3 blue squares, 4 red squares, 2 green squares, 2 large green die, 3 large blue die, 2 small green die, 4 small red die, 2 small yellow die, 2 small blue die, 3 dimes, 6 pennies, and 4 nickels. She tell them that for this game they have to work together to group them in anyway they want. Holly and Emily immediately start grabbing different objects as if it were timed. Holly first grabs the nickels and stacks them vertically. She does the same with the other coins like the pennies and dimes. She then stacked the squares chips similarly and disregarded the colors. Emily gathered all the die and placed them in a pile mixed with the small and large ones. She then stares at the pile for a moment and decides to rearrange them. She grouped the small dice in one group and the large dice in another, again disregarding the color. After they were done Giselle asked why they grouped them in that way and they replied that they grouped them by which ones looked the same. Then she asked them mix everything up and to group them in a different way. Holly said to Emily, “Let’s do it by color!” But Emily replied, “I want to do it by the babies”. She uses “babies” to refer the small sizes of some of the objects. They decided to do both and together they sorted based on both size and color. In comparison to the first time where they had 6 group that included, 1 stack of pennies, 1 of dimes, 1 of nickels, 1 stack of square chips (blue, red, and green), 1 pile of small die (green, red, yellow, blue), and 1 pile of large die (green and blue). This time they had 1 stack of pennies, 1 of dimes, 1 of nickels, 1 stack of blue square, 1 of red squares, 1 of green squares, 1 pile of small green die, 1 of small red die, 1 of small yellow die, 1 of small blue die, 1 pile of large green die, and 1 of large blue die. So the second time they
