Women in Indian culture follow the tradition from the scriptures of Manu. When there husbands die they have 3 options. The first option is that they will be burned with their husbands, if they do not choose this option they can enter a place where they live so that they remain pure and do not dishonor their husbands memory. Many women chose this because it is the often the most reliable one. Windows in India had a very difficult position to be in because they could not remarry either and many times as in Chuyias case the places where they lived were very poor. In the case of Chuyia like many other women found it was difficult for them to become accustomed to a life full of solitude and isolation. Gandhi however wanted to change these old customs ,so that widows could be married if they so choose. Widows have never had it easy, many times the only women that didn't have to go through this were the widows of the Brahmins, other then them many widows were forced to follow the law of Manu which gave them the three options as stated
