Earl Haig Case Study

North York ON – There are growing stigmas by the Toronto District School Board as Earl Haig Secondary School topped the highest electricity usage out of every school in the TDSB in an annual report. This is not the first time Earl Haig topped the list, as the school has remained in that position for the past 2 years. The Toronto District School Board is troubled by this excessive usage as they have to pay the power bill for their institutions. On the energy report, Earl Haig was on top of the list with an average consumption of 128,220 kWh during the year of 2015. This includes the energy usage during off school hours, at 47,680 kWh. To put this into perspective, the average energy consumption at TDSB schools is 58,700 kWh. Earl Haig also has a long air condition run time, at 87 school days where the air conditioners were running compared with the TDSB average of 50 school days. “This isn’t a record you want to have, especially coming from a school that received the Platinum Eco School award,” said TDSB spokesperson Obaid Alam, who is organizing the 2016 TDSB budget. “The astonishing fact is that the school has almost two times the average electricity usage during off-school hours at 58,000 kilowatts an hour, and that’s not counting school hours.” Daniel Only, the TDSB …show more content…
The TDSB has stated that if the plan to install smart meters in every classroom does go through, it would cost the TDSB approximately $8,000. Money which could be used to pay for the electricity or to provide educative tools such as new computers for the computer sciences classrooms. Some teachers and students at Earl Haig are worried about the issues this may cause. “Having energy meters will only shift the blame to the teachers using certain classrooms,” remarked Ms.Schwartz, an English teacher at the school, “If anything, the students are responsible for this.
