His 10-year tenure as the Commissioner of Public Works, along with his many other previous accomplishments, demonstrated a strong background of leadership and public service. In 1996 the country held a special election to fill a lower chamber vacancy in Congress due to Ron Wyden’s departure to the Senate. Blumenauer won that election and was finally elected to the United States House of Representatives. Currently, Earl is Oregon’s 3rd district U.S Representative and his political affiliation aligns with the Democratic Party. He is now in the middle of his 10th term.

Blumenauer has been heavily involved in three committees in particular: the Committee on the Budget, the Committee on Ways and Means, and a Subcommittee on Health. These policy clusters strongly reflect Earl’s ideological preferences.
