I sat in the old oak tree, listening to my favorite playlist. My little sister ran around the yard. Through my earbuds, I heard an eerie but familiar screech. I pulled out my earbuds. What-
She screamed.
It was the type of scream that you never can get out of your head; the one that will haunt you for the rest of your life. I was paralyzed with shock I could see no more than a dot in the sky.
"Violet...?"
My parents called for me from the patio, but I couldn't move. They must have thought I was listening to music, so my mother walked down the stairs and my father stood at the door. As she got closer, she saw that something was wrong.
"What happened?"
"I- Wh-"
"Where's Violet?"
"It took her. How-"
"Someone took her?" Her voice rose in urgency as she began to panic.
"No- it was... it took her."
"What are you talking about?" She laughed, looked around, called Violet's name. "Really, where is she?"
"I don't know."
"You get down from there! You are going to be in serious trouble, young lady!" She can't find out. I dropped down from the tree and made a run for it. I made it to the fence, and once through, I headed for the city.
I could barely make out my father's scream. "Alexandria! Get your ass back here!"
