Roller Coaster Medical Although roller coasters are fun and thrilling, when it comes the body and it’s features, it can be damaged very easily. Effects on the body from a roller coaster can be small or even deadly. But how could a roller coaster cause pain? Injuries that some people experience are, ear barotrauma, increased heart-rate, and whiplash. Ear damage can be an effect from riding a roller coaster. Damage can be caused by the changing of the air pressure on the ears. This can cause ear barotrauma, which is a problem where the tubes in your ear called the eustachian tubes get blocked. Some symptoms of this are ear pain, stuffiness of ears, hearing problems and a few more. Other ways to get ear barotrauma can be altitude change, hiking, ear infections and driving in the mountains. There are a few home remedies to get rid of the pain while suffering from ear barotrauma, a few ways include chewing gum, yawning, and breathing exercises. Whiplash is an injury caused by jerking your head/neck in a very fast sudden motion or movement. You can get whiplash on a roller coaster really easy, all it takes is a sharp corner and you’re in pain. Some symptoms include tightness of the neck, pain when rocking your head back and forth, headaches at the base of the head, and tenderness around your neck. There are a few home remedies to help with the pain of whiplash, The first helpful tool is a hot rice bag or a hot washcloth on the pained area of your neck/head/shoulder. Ice packs and cold washcloths might help, but also slows down the swelling. Also take ibuprofen or aspirin, and get a lot of rest.
