Eagle Scouts Journey

Improved Essays
The Eagle Scout award is a special distinction that is granted to 2% of all scouts, who in turn make up 3% of all minors. I am proud to say that I am one of those scouts. This award is the culmination of all the experience I attained within the Scouting program. This manifested itself in a wealth of leadership skill that has changed me in various ways. It has taught me to be organized, shown me how to learn, and has motivated me to take on difficult challenges. Most of all, it helped me prove that I had what it takes to be an responsible adult, at the age of fourteen.

My leadership experience helped me run an effective Eagle project, but it took me years to develop. My first leadership role was when I was elected as Senior Patrol Leader of

I wasn’t driven by any particular need or want for the award, and the difficulty was a big push away factor. After seeing some of the great leaders our country has had who have been Eagle scouts themselves, I sought to obtain the award, so I could be like them. I decided to help the local elementary school, Clark Creek, with their anti-bullying program by building “Friendship benches”. These benches were created with the idea of making a place where students could make a non-verbal plea for help. One of the biggest issues children have is addressing the issue, and this sought to rectify that problem. My first mission was to organize the stages of my project, which is akin to an senior project in high school. The first goal I set was getting donations from local businesses, which would allow me to build the benches without having to do fundraising. I was able to convince a retailer, Lowe's, to donate 400$ worth of lumber and other materials to begin construction. The day of the construction was hectic. Unlike the other positions I held before, I was completely on my own. The beginning of the project was slow, but by the end, the benchmaking was done with full efficiency. With the conclusion of the project, I had to present it to a Board of Review, whose job was to confirm that I had fulfilled the requirements to my greatest capacity. On July 25, 2013, I had attained the Eagle Scout Award, right before entering high school, and my 15th birthday.

This award marks my transition from childhood to adulthood in a unique way. I had proven at the age of fourteen that I had the ability to perform the same tasks and responsibilities that some adults themselves can not handle. The project was a culmination of everything I had learned from a life changing organization, and I have become a much more mature person as a result. Thank you for reading the story of an important milestone

Slowly, I took on more responsibility positions both in and out of Scouting, imparting my own amazing experience in Philmont onto the younger scouts and leading my fellow students as co-founder of Sustainability Club. Following my contributions in the Pancake Breakfast, I took a year-long hiatus from Scouting to focus on my studies, taking multiple AP classes to help supplement my interests. After the impromptu break, when I rejoined and revisited the enjoyment I experienced from my Philmont trek, I affirmed myself as a Scout for life, as I saw the positive influence the program had on me and knew that Scouting could guide me to become a better citizen of the community. Largely responsible for introducing me to my leadership abilities and individual morals, Scouting has shaped my character through my experiences with…

However, that award would not have been possible without my team and co-captain. Together we had to work to fundraise over $1,000 each year we participated. That took coordination and communication. Especially since all of money was raised through events we held and not through donations. Me, my co-captain, and my teammates all had to work together to make that happen.…

My most significant leadership experience would be when I was in the Girls Varsity Tennis Team. I had been in the tennis team during my highschool years, for 2 years. During that time I learned a lot about being a leader, such as what it means to lead others, and what qualities a leader should have. When I first started playing tennis I started at the position on 2nd doubles, to me I took it as that I was not good enough to play against an opponent by myself on the court. Which was entirely true, because when I began playing I was not any good whatsoever.…
