However, despite the great enjoyment that I found in the various service projects that truly allowed me to explore my interest in engineering and pursue all of my ambitions, the other aspects of Scouting concerning the ethics and traits of Scouts never appeared to me until my trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. As the youngest member of the trek, I often felt the least prepared, with fear rising into my throat every time I thought of the approaching trip. The time for departure came extremely quickly, and I greatly dreaded the idea of any injury occurring on the adventure. As it happens, on the very first day of the hiking trip, among the tallest peaks, the most beautiful woods, and the most wonderful night, a blister formed on my left sole. The next morning, pain immediately wrestled me to the ground, and doubt filled my mind; how could this happen, how in the world could I continue, how dare my body choose to slow down the crew’s progress? Each of these questions and many others permeated my mind, and the intense, mind-numbing pain of the liquid-filled pocket on the ball of my foot only worsened the situation. Bolstered on by my crew, my leaden feet proceeded, and I hiked and I walked and I supported myself on hiking sticks and I moved and I – I suddenly experienced liberation. Though pain still permeated through my body due to a heavy backpack and a tired body, my blister had healed itself, and I began to enjoy the trip. My crew and I went forth on an actual adventure, up every peak and into every nook and cranny of the mountain range that we could explore, witnessing wonders that we could never imagine. On the final sunrise before we returned to base camp, I realized that my experience had reflected Scouting’s ideals: as long as I persevered with a group of supportive friends, I could always rise back up and emerge from any challenge. The Philmont trek had sincerely revealed Scouting’s ideals and principles to me, encouraging me to work with and support others to exceed what any of us could achieve alone, crafting my most illuminating experience in my Scouting
