EURAPCO is a European Alliance of mutual Insurance Companies, which includes eight independent Partners operating in 18 different countries worldwide. In 2014, EURAPCO`s Partners insured over 40 million customers and were accountable for 53 billion Euros of gross written premiums. At the same year, Alliance Partners employed over 67.000 people and, in fact, were providing insurance services to every 20th European citizen.
In the present day, EURAPCO is facing new challenges related to the change of market conditions and technological shift of key insurance market players. The Thesis Research methodology is based on B. de Wit’s (2014) Strategizing model, which includes four consequent steps: Identifying, Analysing, Conceiving and Realising. The first three steps are included in the scope of this document. The Realising phase is not covered by the content of the present Report and is expected to be executed by EURAPCO itself, taking into account given Recommendations. The thesis includes six chapters: Introduction, Literature review, Research methodology, Analysis, Findings and Results, Conclusions and Recommendations. The Introduction identifies the research problem to be addressed and explains the origins of the problem. The Analysis part includes both External and Internal analysis of the environment EURAPCO operates in; External analysis describes global and European insurance market trends and outlines its impact on the strategic intentions of EURAPCO and its Partners; the Internal analysis of the Company includes definition of EURAPCO Mission, Vision, Strategy, Value creation mechanism, Business and Operational models. To assure the quality of EURAPCO Activity Portfolio along with its reasonable size, it is advised to revise existing Portfolio composition. This includes considering a reduction or clustering of currently running initiatives, and/or introduction of new initiatives based on the new Selection requirements. To accomplish this, it is proposed to implement a clear, simple and transparent Strategic Theme Selection Algorithm (“Funnel”- based Algorithm), which will combine top-down and bottom-up Theme selection approaches. While considering adoption of new Initiatives, it is recommended to take into account identified market drivers, reflected in PESTEL analysis (External Analysis Chapter). As of today, Climate change, Driverless cars, Joint venturing (or greenfielding) in the area of Innovation seem to be strong potential candidates, which can become Strategic Themes upcoming year(s). To support the Selection Process, a Strategic Theme Ranking Tool has been developed and handed-in to the EURAPCO
