Students affective filter is influenced greatly when exposed to a ESOL specific lesson plan and a modified lesson plan. English Language learners feel less anxiety learning BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills) and CALPS (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency) in a ESOL specific classroom with other ESOL students. During which students would learn and use both BICS vocabulary and how it relates to American social culture as well as CALPS vocabulary that focuses more on academic language. The lesson plan focused on BICS American social skills as well as CALPS academic grammar skills, idioms. During a ESOL modified lesson, English language learners experience more anxiety and worry about making mistakes in front of their peers. The ESOL modified lesson objective is to solely teach academic content and CALPS vocabulary. The teaching strategies between ESOL specific and modified lesson plans have a lot of similarities. Both lesson plans would require students to work cooperatively, use graphic organizers, and benefit from teacher modeling. However, there might be slight modification applied to the lesson for earlier acquisition stages in an ESOL modified lesson.
