During the ESL 103 class I was able to absorb in different English segments, these sections are writing, speech, listening and reading. It wasn’t English writing only. This Class definitely helped me to improve my English skills, in contrast other English classes that I already took, this class was the one that has helped me the most. Even though I still have to practice my skills in order to get better.
At the beginning of learning English I had problems writing, I was so confused with the grammar, unity and punctuation. Before this course I didn't know how to place a comma or a semicolon in place, not only that but I only knew a little of subject and verb agreement. After practicing and a lot of interactive exercises, now I'm able to identify those grammar problems on my writing and fix them. Something else that I learned was about modified sentences, after learning about this, I have been able to write more clearly.

At the beginning of this class I had problems with the pronunciation, even though I'm from a Spanish speaking country some English words similar to the Spanish words, but with these words different pronunciation. Something that lend a hand to my improvement was when the professor was able to correct me when I answered a question out loud; not only that, but in this class we had to perform series of oral presentations of different topics through the semester, I was able to expose my ideas and get instant feedback, and as a part of self-conscious exercise I was able to write an reflection paragraph. Now, I feel more comfortable speaking to

The barrier language that I have between Hmong and English is what makes my writing difficult to understand from the start of the school year, not only that, but also just me trying to throughly write an explanation of what I have thought of in mind. Sometimes it doesn’t come out on the paper as I have, have in my thoughts. Which in return create flaws in my level one, two, or three writing paper that affect my writing skills. The flaws that I have slightly improve on my writing: create a clear and stronger thesis statement, subject- verb agreement, and transitioning. Constructing a firm claim and allowing the reader to be able to identify which position I’ve take through my writing by creating a rough draft of what I am going to say in…

The first time, I enrolled in this class, I felt excited knowing this class would help on my grammar, so I can become a better writer. My first thought that cross my mind was this was going to be easy and it was. My last experienced with writing and English was okay because I mainly get a B or a C, but rarely I would get an A. It was similar to what you had taught us in class because we always learned about grammar out of a book and we got tested after we been practice.…

Although I cannot say I am fully confident with my ability to speak in the class, I think I have much improved from what I originally started at. I have participated more often in group discussions, expressing valuable views that I firmly believe in despite being challenged by my peers. This class has been very challenging in this aspect of speaking and communicating my opinions, however, I think it’s a good challenge because I can see some of the improvement I have made to make myself more comfortable in the discussion space. For the further, I will continue to listen actively to see how I can jump in on the conversation in addition to trying to express myself more often, even if I feel like everyone will disagree…

Throughout high school, I have noticed an overall growth in my writing skills. The skills that I have learned since freshman year has helped me grow as a writer. In the beginning of Freshman year my writing had limited vocabulary, informal expressions, and it lacked proper organization. My English teacher encouraged me to use a thesaurus and to read more books to help broaden my range of vocabulary and sentence structure. Therefore, these resources helped me build a vast range of vocabulary including transition words which helped my writing flow more smoothly.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

The last one I found that I need to improve everything when it comes to writing in general. I have two problems; First is every time I am going to write something I always think about the subject in Spanish and that is a big problem because in Spanish is different from English. Everything is backward and the verbs and transitions are very different. That makes it more difficult for me because I have to go back and try to make sense on what I am writing. The second problem that I have is, that I like numbers better than letters and that makes my life a little bit complicated.…

My approach to reading has changed over the semester. Before this class, I would just read without taking notes. In reading, I would just read instead of looking up the difficult word or using context clues to figure out what the word means. Now during my reading I annotate and look up unknown vocabulary words. When I look up the difficult word, I would find the closest appropriate definition.…
