ENC/1102 Reflection

Improved Essays
During the first half of the semester for ENC 1102, I believe that my writing skills have improved from ENC 1101; some of which are getting to page length, correctly citing a source, and incorporating how a quote is related to my argument. I still have some errors within my writing that I have not quite figured out how to tackle. Some concepts that I have not gotten down to a tee must be coming up with a thesis statement, basic grammar errors, introducing quotations, and repetition. I have also learned how to distinguish the difference between a personal essay and an argumentative essay with first hand on the two types and how why my grade differed from essay one and two. During writing I run into problems with coming up with a thesis; the trouble with this is that I almost always confuse what a thesis statement is and I don’t specifically identify my stance within the essay. I do not have problems with reaching page length but with that I come across errors such as repetition. I have noticed in my writings that I repeat myself a lot, I would explain a topic/quote, but …show more content…
The first essay was mostly a personal essay where a topic was chosen then it had to be related to an essay called “Bad Feminist” by Roxane Gay using the same format Gay used. The second essay was an argumentative essay which we had to compare multiple sources, an essay called “Why Nice Guys Finish Last” by Julia Serano and two TED Talks and come up with one conclusion that ties all the sources together but still add personal views within the essay. Comparing my grades, I found that I did better on essay one than I did on essay two. I believe that I did better on essay one because it was a personal essay where I put my own thoughts into the writing. As for essay two, I believe that I struggled with creating a thesis and relying on the quotes and sources to make my essay rather than adding personal thoughts into

The first essay that I wrote for EN100 was the Literacy Narrative Essay. Although this assignment seemed dreadful, this essay made me realize how much was expected of me, and how far my writing was from those expectations. Throughout the course of the semester, my writing vastly improved, getting closer and closer to meeting expectations. The Discourse Community Essay was so close to those expectations, and the Informative Essay was right where I wanted it to be.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

When I walked into English at the beginning of the year, I was terrible at writing thesis statements. They were either too vague or too “inside the story” and they overall weren’t well written. After a whole semester of practice, however, they have greatly improved. The first proper thesis statement I ever wrote in english class was for my Life of Pi essay. The first time I wrote it, it was awful.…

I have noticed in my different essays while examining them that I would often excel in one part of the essay, while still failing to repair other flaws. In my Modernism essay, I incorporated evidence well, but I did not add smooth transitions, making the writing seem choppy. In my synthesis essay, I made sure to polish my transitions and include plenty of evidence to support my claims, yet the essay was focused too much on the evidence and not enough on the arguments themselves and the meaning of the evidence. Nevertheless, I fixed nearly every mistake there was in my last essay, an analysis of The Visit. I used strong diction that contributed to both imagery and my defeated tone.…

Over the past three months, class ENC1101 has taught me some major lessons in English writing. My expectation coming into this class was to become a better writer, at least in my eyes. Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
