EMTS Reflection Paper

When I first went to the EMS info session I was excited, nervous and also very intimiated. I saw how packed the info session was and found out about the competitive application process. I will admit I was skeptical about my chances of being accepted but I gave it a try. When I recieved the email I was beyond happy because the EMTS mission statement about treating people with kindness and compassion resonated with me since I had a passion for volunteering and I pursued that in high school. But at the end of the email I was reminded of the costs of the class, it was over $1,000 that needed to be paid very shortly. At the end of my senior year in high school my family and I our home in a fire. The school didn’t take into account this loss into …show more content…
Recently, we have not had as many applicants as in the previous year applying to the class. This is a problem that can be addresses by making the SCU EMS organization more visible on campus. I propose that we communicate with orientation leaders in order to include us as one of the important resources on campus that they teach about. By having us present at all of the sessions we will be able to reach all the incoming students and slowly the negative stigma associated with us will fade over time. During fall quarter we can present to freshman in their CTW, C&I and LEAD classes explaining about our organization and encouraging them to look into our organization and apply for the class. While this could be a little time consuming and difficult to implement, we could possibly partner up with the Wellness Center and the peer health educators to more clearly explain the role of our organization, and show students the resource we could be and hopefully get rid of the stigma associated with us that we will get people in trouble or that we only help people that are drunk. This will allow us to reach a diverse audience that consist of more than just science majors and will allow us to have a more competitive pool for future EMTs and also will also pain us in a more positive light on …show more content…
Many times, people have the idea that we are only seen on campus when a member of our community is intoxicated and because of this we may not give off the most approachable vibe. Tabling in benson, especially a couple of weeks before class applications are due and throughout the year will allow us to be more approachable and will let our presence be more strongly felt on campus.
I am genuinely passionate about this organization and I want to play my part in order to allow SCU EMS to continue to thrive and flourish. While I am not the most vocal about my opinions and ideas but I really do love and care for this organization. With my skills and passion of working with people, my attention to detail, organization and love for this organization I feel like I can take on this position and play my part in keeping SCU EMS
