More than 400 dogs and cats were taken from the Memphis Tennessee area to shelters in Upstate New York and the Pacific Northwest that had room for them. "There are so many over crowded shelters out there and the people who run them are faced with very difficult decisions and the animals are faced with uncertain futures, our job is to help them,: explaisn Chemung County SPCA Executive Director Tom Geroy.

"We have gotten so good a spaying and neutering up here in the Northeast that a lot of organizations have a difficult time meeting the demand for dogs where particularly in the Southeast, spaying and neutering isn't robust so ultimately those shelters end up being overcrowded," explains Geroy. The 13 dogs are both puppies and adults. "We have to put a great deal of resources into their vetting. They come with some vetting but some of the animals are spayed or nutered we have to put them under a lot of verternarian care and that gets a little bit expensive but because we have such a great support of community they help us with that," says Geroy.
The SPCA says they will be holding the puppies for 10 days and the adults for five before they can be adopted. "I anticipate, this batch of dogs is going to go really quick. We've got a lot of really cute dogs and really some unique breeds we don't often see in our community," says
