ELL Classroom Observation Report

It is still early in the year, and a lot of the student data has not been calculated yet, but from what I have observed, there is one student who is very new to English and is in ELL. Based on this fact an instructional strategy I would use is checking for understanding and questioning, a student who is new to English may have a hard time understanding what is happening, and may not ask for help. With this, if they do not ask for help, and the teacher does not check if they understand, the student will not do very well with assignments, and will not further their learning. An activity that can be used with this student is during reading, they have a more one-on-one learning environment, and have a list of simple questions, like who is in the story, where are they, and what is happening on this page, this will check if the student is understanding the story, as well as help them to answer these questions even when they do not have the paper.

    An ELL student is described as a linguistically and culturally diverse student who is learning the English language in addition to his or her native language. In my current fieldwork experience and to the best of my knowledge, there are no ELLs students attending any of the classes that I currently observe. From what I’ve observed, the classes I attend are not highly diversified by ELL’s, those students who are, seem to speak English fluently with no noticeable difficulty.     Being a second-grade teacher in Selah Washington gives way to meeting a new and unique brand of students on a yearly basis.     I can empathize with teachers who say that the observation and evaluation process does not seem reciprocal in nature. Most of my follow-up evaluations have either been waived or conducted in five minutes or less in which the principal hits upon the highlights of my observation.
