You still need someone to read the records and pick out the codes that are needed, something a program would have a hard time doing properly. A program might see the key term, but not the additional terms that lead to a completely different code- critical thinking is an integral part of both coding and billing. There is still the need to connect the dots, query doctors when needed, and interact with patients. If a patient calls needed help with their bill or making a payment plan, working with a computer would be nothing but frustrating. EHRs make our jobs easier, but they won’t be taking them over anytime soon. I think we will be safe in our future
