This is thanks to the interview project and the interview integration paper and presentation. Due to these assignments, I learned the importance of perspective taking, empathy, and professionalism in both engineering profession and in life. Before I went into this interview, I didn’t think the three topics I chose are all applicable or related to engineering profession, but Professor Hynes helped me realize the importance of self-awareness, empathy, and professionalism in my future profession in the span of 30 minutes. I used to think that self-awareness and understanding other people’s perspective are not useful in engineering because I thought engineers are more product design focused and are not required to have human interactions. I was very wrong. In order to come up with the best and the most efficient design, engineers often collaborate with other people who have different skill sets from them. In other words, I can’t achieve a lot by working alone and going in one direction. So if I don’t have the ability to see other people’s perspectives and comprise, I won’t be very successful as an engineer since I will be missing out on other people’s creative and innovative inputs. This is also related to our everyday lives since we’re living in a highly globalized world where we interact or work with people who are culturally very different from us. To be a respectful global citizen, we have to be self-aware …show more content…
There are some communication skills I still need to improve such as internal listening, active listening, and removing barriers of preconceived notions. These again can’t be achieved by reading and learning. I need to keep in mind that things like barriers in listening and preconceived notions are present in every conversation and work hard to eliminate them. I will also practice my active listening skills in everyday conversation to improve the qualities of interactions I have with people around me. But what I am more concerned about than communication skills is my leadership skills, since this course focused mostly on improving communication skills. I feel like leadership is something I can’t learn by reading a lot, especially emotionally intelligent leadership. Before I took this course, I thought of leadership as simply having the ability to lead people and organize a group. I never thought of leadership as something that needs to adjust to different context and never thought qualities such as authenticity or emotional self-perception had anything to do with leadership. But I learned from this course and Emotionally Intelligent Leadership that to be a great leader I have to be able to read context of the group and the environment, lead
