ECFS Reflection

Reflection on Growth in the ECFS Major During my four years in the Early Childhood and Family Studies major, there are various themes that have been addressed in multiple classes that I took, yet three major themes stood out to me. They are the importance of a child’s first 2000 days, the consistent prevalence of achievement gap, and the benefits of active parental involvement in the child’s education. Not only are these three themes addressed in most of the ECFS classes I took, I also experienced first-hand experience the importance of them from my service learning time at the Chinese Information and Service Center (CISC), which serves mainly Asian immigrant families and their children.

Although it is impossible to let all the children I teach to receive the same education, I would still like to try my best to be a dedicated teacher who impacted a child’s life. Most students in the ECFS major probably heard about the seven dollar return for every one dollar invested in early intervention. It is more effective to build the foundation right than to fix the problem in the future. More funding, resources, and knowledge will be needed to address these themes, and awareness of the importance of early childhood education and intervention will need to be spread. Nonetheless, teacher’s commitment to the field can make a big improvement in the education system. My next step after graduation is to be working with toddlers in a day care program. My personal philosophy of early childhood education after reading the Core Competencies for Early Care and Education Professionals in Washington State is to routinely reflect on my own teaching practices and how it impacts the children, family, and co-workers I work with, familiar myself with current trends in toddler’s early childhood education, continue to seek opportunities to improve my practice and professional growth, and lastly, to evaluate my own performance and set future goals

Three most significant lessons that I learned are (1). To be an advocate for young children and family in order to create quality program in your community. (2) To have passion from one another is positive behavior for early childcare professionals; we have to respect one another in order to get along. (3)As an early childhood educator, we should not stereotype other cultures; however, we should welcome diversity in a positive environment. As all of these are significant to diversity, equity and social justice, it has to be implemented to support children and families.…

I can use the Seventeen competencies as an example and guide to go by to make sure that I am doing things that I am supposed to do to encourage the development and the learning of children. Teachers are the instructional part of the classroom and the program. We need to plan on what the children are learning, and make sure we are guiding them and teaching them in a way so that they can learn. We need to make sure that we are assessing the child on what they are learning and producing an environment to which the children are able to learn with. The early childhood education is changing almost every day.…

Early childhood professionals have the skills and talents to provide services to all children and should not be discouraged from providing these services to certain children, simply because the areas they live in may be low income or have higher incidences of violence. Rather, as early childhood professionals, we should be intentional in providing quality services to children living in poverty. We need to be committed to serving families across the economic spectrum and also to increasing our awareness of the many experiences of families and children in poverty. Poverty is not just about money. It is a comprehensive life experience, that as professionals in early childhood, we must work towards understanding.…

In early childhood education, there is a need for focus on students and their growth; social, emotional, spiritual and physical. My goal as an early childhood educator is to meet the child’s needs in these areas and extend their development. To facilitate this, it is necessary to provide a purposeful environment, recognise learners and how they learn, as well as conduct sufficient planning and support. Children have a natural curiosity and desire to explore their environment and as such, I will support and scaffold their learning experiences to cater for these motivators. The theory of constructivism acknowledges that children are active participants in their learning and that ‘learning by doing’ allows children to meet their want of playing and exploring their surroundings.…

The concept of the ‘traditional University student’ being one who is enrolled full time in a University or higher educa-tional programme, without concurrent employment or high levels of family responsibility is no longer realistic (McInnis, James, Hartley, 2000; Watt & Patterson, 2000, pp.107-116). Attempting to meet the demands of work and family, in addition to taking on additional study commitments, has the potential of placing enormous strain on the physical and men-tal health of the early childhood worker. The PSCA (2014), emphasises the importance of professional learning and development for all childcare workers, as essential for the delivery of high quality early childhood edu-cation and care. Recommending that professional learning, development and support, be linked with the National Quality Standard, to enable educators to engage in professional dialogue, which supports a deeper understanding of child development and early child-hood theory, thereby enhancing and improving practice (PSCA,…

Conducting home visits and helps me to learn about student’s interest and how they learn. According to Kostelnik, Soderman, Whiren, and Rupiper (2015) “knowing children, understanding their needs, and determining how to best guide their social, emotional, and cognitive development-these are the responsibilities of all teachers but especially of early childhood educators” (p. 189). To be an efficient educator, I know and understand the critical need for involving families and their communities in every aspect of their children’s learning experiences. My responsibility as an advocate for young children and their families requires me to get out into the community and find resources that will support all learners and their families to ensure their academic and overall…

Training and awareness needs to be made available for families of young children to utilize in order to establish a new and improved positive image.
