My desire to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Science Technology stems from my childhood, which was shaped by a constant exposure to animals. My interest in companion animals and their veterinary care peaked about 7 years ago when I began to volunteer with a service dog training organization called ECAD. When I first started, I learned about basic grooming and training techniques by practicing on mature Golden Retrievers. I gradually worked my way up to being able to work with dogs that ranged from about 2 months old to 2 years old. Currently I am the only youth volunteer who holds a Public Access license, which allows me to bring dogs into public places for training. Also I have gotten permission to bring a service dog in training

I worked in the biology lab labeling pelts, bones, and animal specimens; by twenty-one, I obtained my bachelor’s degree and strived for my first job out of university. That summer, I joined Humane Society Naples and worked as a veterinary assistant, while also volunteering at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in wildlife rehabilitation. This is my turning point and reminds me of Claudia at age seven, who wanted to save animals. The most vivid and unforgettable part of my time there was seeing the transformation of the animal’s health and behavior. From the time, they come into the shelter, scared and sometimes in pain, to then being apart of the team to medically assess and treat them, to witness their ability to play with other animals, and then to the joys of adopters coming in looking for their forever pet, is…

My experiences, academic background and personality are three key aspects of my life that make the medical field a preference and a particularly suitable field for me. My interest in medicine was first sparked when I volunteered at CentraState Medical Center working with geriatric patients. To further explore this interest, I joined the First Aid Squad in my town. Riding on ambulances and volunteering at the squad provided much-needed insight into the field and taught me valuable skills, such as patient care and effective communication. After completing a four-month intensive EMT course and state exam, I can proudly say that I am now a New Jersey certified EMT.…

On the second floor of the Humane Society of North Texas in Fort Worth, Peggy Brown’s office is one of the many squared off offices. Taking a peek into her working space, you can tell it’s one of character; piles and piles of HSNT pamphlets, education material, and brochures for donors cover the floor and shelves. Photos and drawings of furry friends are pinned through the petite room while Brown, HSNT’s community outreach coordinator, is busy gathering material for upcoming events. It’s the humane society’s 111 anniversary this year and Brown has been with the organization for 13 of those celebrations. But Brown’s love for helping animals began at a young age and has since grown from there.…

My goal is to pursue graduate studies, and ultimately the Ph.D degree in the neurological sciences. I wish to achieve this goal so, I can teach to others how the brain and the nervous system are interlaced. This is because of an experience growing up with my grandmother. When I was 13, my grandmother suffered a stroke and lost the ability to move her right arm. This piqued my interest about neurological disorders because I learned how the stoke interfered with her movements and hindered her performance of daily activities.…

The buzz of indiscernible conversations and clamour of the emergency department (ED) faded into the distance as I felt the burning gaze of everyone in the room. The rhythmic beeping of the oxygen saturation monitor intensified as if taunting me, challenging me. I became cognizant of how tremulous and sweaty my hands were as I pleaded for the endotracheal tube’s cooperation. After what felt like an eternity, I heard the words I had been desperately waiting for, “breath sounds bilaterally.” While I was drawn to the high acuity adrenaline-inducing cases, it was the diversity of undifferentiated patients that solidified my decision to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine (EM).…

The first step to obtaining a DVM is to complete undergraduate school. Several schools only require 45-90 undergraduate hours, but the school I am interested in, requires a bachelors degree. Finding a position in the field of veterinarian medicine has a high chance, due to the current rate of attrition, many Veterinarians are starting to retire and those places will need to be filled.…

Realizing that substandard animal care was generally not due to lack of compassion, but lack of education and finances, I worked closely with local veterinarians to find balance between what is medically possible and financially feasible. Limited resources often stood in the way of quality medical care for aging pets, leading to owner surrender or euthanasia. Many of these pets were suffering with untreated, joint disease, further igniting my interest in medicine, specifically orthopedics. Meeting with an academic advisor at a nearby veterinary college encouraged me to take the next step in fulfilling what I believe to be my vocation. With the support and trust of my family, I decided to leave a good career in marketing in order to reinvent…
